Introduction: Ruins of a Cathedral
“What a load of rubbish. There’s nothing that resists a good punch up the conker!” The man sipped his pint and continued: “The only thing you need to keep yourself safe is a pair of strong fists.” The audience cheered but many did so only because he was the local boxing champion. Champion as in the one that had knocked the most patrons over the informal brawls that were organized in the centre of the bar every weekend.
That didn’t mean that he didn’t know how to pack a mean punch when he wanted. On the contrary, he was known for having heavy hands and hard work had only made them stronger. After all, if he spent days lifting the equivalent of a small town in weight he wasn’t going to shy from a bit of extra activity when he had some time off. Of course, the betting surely helped and wetted his taste for a good fight even more.
He gulped another pint, grabbed his beret and left. He didn’t say more than a brief goodbye but nobody wasn’t going to call him on his abrupt manners, anyway. He closed his jacket and even unfolded his sleeves against the bitter wind that blew in his face. He walked through the dimly lit streets. A few lamps waited patiently to be repaired and bowed at the gusts that slowed his pace. His delayed steps brought him to the ruined cathedral and he puffed.
Immediately afterwards, he gasped at what he heard. “Is there a champion for me?” The wailing came from the ruins. Deserted they were supposed to be but reality sounded wildly different. He paused and thought. A cry of pain came from the inside and he hesitated. “Help me!” He felt his feet heavy, stuck on the ground. He took a timid step forward; he couldn’t recognise himself. He advanced, slowly and went into the cathedral. The doors bellowed shut. Chains grabbed his arms and the ground started to melt. “Thanks for coming. I needed a courageous spirit so much…”
