Introduction: Council of Queens
The cards were laid before the council and the spectral fortune teller left. The queens leaned over the cards and looked at each other. “This has to be a mistake!” said the Queen of Bronze. “We can’t let this happen.” said the Queen of Ice. “We must act without delay.” said the Queen of Jade. Perhaps her kingdom wasn’t as well known as others but her words were echoed among the queens. “We have to reach a decision and act without delay. The risk is too high not to do something.” “We have to stop them but, even if we fail, we may slow them.” “It’s our only hope. Help may arrive in time if we do.”
As they stared at the pulsating breach in the distance they saw the hordes of spirits advancing and taking all life with them. With every death, their numbers rose. They were an army that couldn’t be stopped by any living being. They could be slowed, though, especially if the walls of metal, snow and mineral were high and wide enough. They were rustic, a far cry from the ornamented marvels they used to conjure but their sturdiness made up for it. Other queens also helped with spells and wards, nothing was too little to be discarded, yet no matter what they did it seemed insufficient.
It was. Standing in the shadows, looking out the windows of the castle, they saw the spirits move forwards. The walls were formidable obstacles and the magical traps were being more effective than expected in stopping them. Still, their numbers were so vast that no matter how many traps were renewed they knew that time remained a scarce resource. “No word from the other borders?” “Nothing.” “This passivity will bury us.” “Perhaps, but there’s only so much we can do.” Dusk welcomed night and the spirits glowed against a dark sky without Moon or stars. It seemed as if they had devoured them all, too.
An hour before midnight a visitor arrived: the spectral fortune teller. He laid the cards on the council’s table and proceeded to leave, as always. The queens eagerly rushed to see the turn of the tide but there was none. “Wait, the cards are the same but the order is different.” “Why doesn’t that spectre explain his cursed cards?” The spectre turned as he was exiting through the door. “We mean no offence, spectre…” “No offence? Speak clearly for once damned soul!” The voice of the spectre boomed in the room. “My soul is damned indeed but not as you think. It’s the curse of eternal premonition which gives time no meaning.” “What about the horde?” “They are looking for me. They want to exist without time. You must slow them. Help will arrive, I have confirmation of that. It’s in the cards.” With that, he left.
It had been the first time he had spoken and it could’ve gone better but they had important information. With what little strength the Queens had they reinforced the walls and laid new lines of spells and wards on them. The hordes kept advancing, or trying to. There was a slight weakening in their numbers but still large enough to destroy any army. Midnight came and they noticed three glowing figures behind the walls. They moved through them, ignoring magical protection and traps alike. What they didn’t ignore was the spirits. They started to snuff them out as a splash of water on a set of candles. The queens wanted to get nearer to identify them but it was too risky. What they did know is what the cards told: “in multiples they come and in threes they go.” “We need a translator for this kind of things.” said the Queen of Jade. “Better know who we are dealing with as allies.” said the Queen of Frost. “Lest they turn their attention to us and become a greater risk than we have ever seen.”
