Introduction: Snow and Flames

A world of ice, wherever one looks it’s all covered in a white, cold mantle. “Pretty cosy, right?” Something moves in the whiteness and then she actually appears: a snow chameleon. “Welcome to my home.” She bowed and smiled. Her skin was light blue but her dark clothes made a stark contrast. “Doesn’t it seem like there’s too much snow around here?” she turned and lifted her arms. The trees seemed to shake and revealed their dark brown bark after the snow fell. “Now that’s better. We need a bit of colour around here.” She looked at everything around with wide open eyes and inspected every move made or inferred; she missed nothing of the world and so was delighted with a new visitor.

“So, this is your home?” She looked down at the little creature. “Yes, and you’re too scaly to being so judgemental, little dragon.” “I like it but it’s too cold.” “I know, but there’s nothing I can do.” “I could light some wood.” “Really?” Together they gathered sticks and branches that had dried on the ground after a long time of being forgotten. “We need to make a circle of rocks to prevent the fire from escaping. It always does that and it’s not nice.” said the dragon with a serious tone. “Sure, I know where we can get some.” They went to the river and the banks were surrounded with rocks. They carried as many as they could but never attempted to cross and get some bigger rocks from the other side. “The ice’s too thin, we’d fall.” “Brr, that’s not nice. It’s cold enough without water.”

With the rocks circling the wood the dragon breathed firmly into the wood but only a puff of smoke escaped the maw and so started to cough. “Are you okay?” It took a little while for the dragon to recover. “I guess it’s too cold for this. It usually works, I assure you, but maybe not this time.” The dragon looked a bit ashamed. “Don’t worry, I’m used to the cold. I just would like some heat to make the place have more colours. I’ve seen fireplaces at night and they are wonderful.” The dragon wasn’t dissuaded. “I may not be able to breathe fire but we can start one by rubbing wood. I’ll show you.” They started rubbing sticks against a flattened log but they only managed some smoke out of it. “It’s just too cold for this, too.” They looked at each other, almost resigned, but the dragon was starting to run out of patience.

“Every single time I try I just can’t rely on this bloody fire!” The dragon screamed and a burst of flames erupted from maw to sky in a pillar that lit the dusky sky. The ice chameleon grabbed a handful of sticks and lit them in the flames. She looked at them almost entranced by the dancing flames. The dragon noticed: “Quick, in the lumber.” She threw the sticks on the wood and the fire slowly started to light the approaching night. Shadows danced and light but pleasing warmth came from it, even the trees welcomed some respite from the cruel winter. “Sorry for losing my temper. I just, was tired of always being unable to breathe fire.” “But you did! It was great!” “Yes, but I have to be more careful. As a dragon I should be responsible for the flames I make. That’s what they teach us in school.” “You’re still going to school?” “Well, yes, I’m just a little dragon…” “Oh, I always wanted to go to school! Do you think I could go too?” “I don’t know, it’s for dragons but it’ll be nice. You’ll like it there. There’s lots of fire and… maybe it’ll be too hot for you.” “Don’t worry, I can change into a fire chameleon. I’m very good at changing.”
