Introduction: The Dark Valkyrie
She came from the sky and stood in the middle of the battlefield. It was late at night so only a few opportunistic thieves and courageous soldiers searching to bury comrades noticed her. Most didn’t give her any notice, she simply appeared out of nowhere like everybody does in a battlefield at night. You don’t want to be seen or heard, lest the dead be disturbed. She looked around at the carnage and realised that the comments of biggest battle ever seen on Earth weren’t an exaggeration. As far as the horizon went, there were corpses.
She walked around, looking at the fallen and ignoring the living. Not that the living weren’t doing the same, in this battlefield only the dead mattered but for different reasons. As she walked a cold air was left around her, one with a strange smell, a bit sweet and a bit bitter, with a barely discernible dark blue colour. It was something subtle but from the few that noticed it they would merely accuse her of wearing too much perfume and how unfitting that felt. She did hear them but didn’t mind, they were alive. It was the dead that she made a point of checking on.
After a few hours she had seen each corpse and the whole battlefield was covered in a dim mist that gave a feeling of mixed sorrow and respite. She stood in the middle of the battlefield, near to where she had arrived and started to float. As she rose the spirits of the fallen came out of their bodies and formed a whirlwind around her. The tornado gained strength until all spirits joined and followed her ascending into the skies. Of course tales were told and seldom believed but the legend of the dark valkyrie started there. At least, that’s what is told about that great battle centuries ago. Let’s hope that tomorrow we don’t have to see her again. Let’s hope for a truce, my friend.
