Introduction: Magma at Night
Magma advances down towards the forest. The trees fall like toothpicks and burn in instants. In a few seconds all that was green is erased from existence. The flames make for quite a spectacle as they engulf each object in their path, a show that the night sky doesn’t ignore. A star blinks in the darkness of space then disappears. Many others follow through, devoured by a force which, like magma, makes of the mightiest simple morsels.
The magma finally meets its match. It falls on the ocean, the waters boil and steam forms a curtain from which the indignity tries to hide. There’s something to be admired though: for all of its destruction the magma is creating new land which one day may be a rich home to new life. No such thing is to be seen above. The stars disappear and nothing is left behind. The emptiness of space is merely extended, there’s no compensation for such a loss.
The volcano finally gets tired of its tantrum and quiets down. It will get angry again but for now it just wants to rest and ponder. That’s not what happens elsewhere, in space. There’s no quieting down, there’s no relaxation, there’s no peace, only hunger. The stars disappear, whole systems devoured, they disappear and nothing seems to be enough. Nothing will be enough. If this is no natural force then there is a will behind it: the will to consume.
