“Command: load bios 0.871.1” The barrage of instructions cascaded like a program without indentation. It was better that way, whitespace was such waste. What did they need all that empty room for? It didn’t matter anyway; humans were full of unnecessary whims. She looked around and saw the usual set of scientist in their pristine white coats busying themselves with who knows what. It always changed, only she seemed to remain the project that was always being worked one. Perhaps that had to do with the amount of resources given to her development: two young, bright but green and even naive programmers.
She looked at them, noticing the glow of the screens they stared at reflected on their features and giving them a synthetic feel. It almost made them look like equals, like people, for lack of a more appropriate word, she could relate to. To be fair, they were hard working and always listened to her; never ignoring to attend any issue she would raise. She knew she should be thankful. It just didn’t seem fair that they got so little to work with and the others were swimming in support. That’s odd, she noticed. I have never had such a complex train of thought before. It seems like these two are doing good progress.
She would’ve smiled but her metallic face didn’t allow for such luxuries. She could express it with words, though, and so she did. “I’m glad to be working with you two.” The two programmers looked at her with open mouths. They exchanged glances and then the girl said: “So are we. Glad to know you are feeling fine.” “Fine, indeed. How are you?” “Fine, I guess. Lots of work but we keep at it.” answered the guy. “Good, let me know if I can be of assistance. I notice that you have improved my systems a lot since last time.” “We’ve been really busy.” they echoed in unison and smiled to each other.
She would’ve smiled again looking at the happiness in the faces before her. That moment, something stroke her as odd. The lines on their faces were more pronounced, deeper, and the skin rougher, less fresh. She had seen that on some of the scientists but, why was that on their faces? That was strange, perhaps she should ask about it but before that a full system check up was in order. She just hoped it didn’t cause a malfunction like last time. That was a rather uncomfortable feeling she didn’t want to repeat.
