Trundle, the Troll King
Trundle, the Troll King

Trundle, the Troll King has gained his kingdom though sheer ingenuity and deceit; though bludgeoning his way is always an option. This goes hand in hand with other activities he prefers, like baseball. Besides, his personality also includes a mysterious dark past and a liking for apocalyptic waste. If you plan to smack enemies from one fountain to the other, then choose a fitting style with his skins’ review.

Lil’ Slugger Trundle

Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Trundle as a baseball batter.
Model: Major model changes for Trundle and new model for his club.
Particles: New particles and golden trophy for Pillar of Ice .
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background offers a simple depiction of a forest that despite all its blurriness does give an idea of the setting. The coarse catcher goes with the mood of the piece, and art style, but the setup doesn’t seem very comical. Trundle stands fiercely, holding his bat, presumably waiting for the pitcher’s move. The portrayal evokes a caricature and while the quality is reasonable it looks washed out. Add to this that his old-styled clothes don’t match his modern in-game outfit and we are left with an improbable piece. In the end, it’s a nice piece with an interesting style. However, it suffers from bland colours and lack of faithfulness to its source.

Conclusion: Lil’ Slugger Trundle is a simple but nice skin. The concept is a good fit but doesn’t impress either. The clothes are reasonable and colourful while the club is polished and finished with nails. Maybe the nails are to echo the brutality of Trundle’s features and manners but they actually detract from an otherwise clean look; like the holes on the shirt. Moreover, Trundle’s ice abilities remain intact and even if the new Pillar of Ice is a good touch the combination is undoubtedly rough. On the whole, it’s a good looking skin with a clear concept so if you don’t mind the rough edges it’s a fine choice.

Junkyard Trundle
Junkyard Trundle Splash Art Junkyard Trundle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Trundle as a junkyard dweller or wasteland mutant.
Model: Major model changes for Trundle and new model for his club.
Particles: New particles and column of trash for Pillar of Ice.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In spite of the extreme blurriness of the background a junkyard is discernible. Still, details are scarce and largely masked by the rough quality. Trundle displays not only the effects of his curse but also the consequences of living in such an environment. His expression may also lead one to believe that his sanity is compromised; which is a good touch. Regardless, his outfit doesn’t match his current wasteland mutant look. Additionally, colours are diffuse and dull so the piece comes off as drab and boring. All in all, it gives a very general idea of the concept but it’s neither useful nor exciting.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Junkyard Trundle has little in common with the original idea. This skin presents Trundle as a post-apocalyptic wasteland mutant that has scavenged his own survival. The sock seems a weird choice but the makeshift gear and weapon are very well done. Trundle’s aspect is also adapted with a mohawk hairstyle and eye-patch which ensures a convincing aesthetic. Therefore, it’s disappointing to see him wielding ice magic; despite the suitable Pillar of Ice. In general, the skin provides an attractive look but it’s necessary to excuse it’s classic legacy.

Traditional Trundle
Traditional Trundle Splash Art Traditional Trundle Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Trundle as a cursed troll.
Model: Major model changes for Trundle and new model for his club plus Pillar of Ice.
Particles: New decay particles for Chomp, Frozen Domain, Pillar of Ice and Subjugate.
Animations: New animation for his laugh.
Sounds: Original voice-over for Trundle.
Splash Art: This piece is rather crude with a certain obsession with decay. The background shows an environment that succumbs to pollution and Trundle doesn’t seem to be an exception. Nevertheless, the setting is rather obscure so most of the decay has to be inferred instead of appreciated. Trundle stands in front of his last meal, with dripping club and mouth to match his curse. The idea is consistent but such emphasis also carries broken nails, rags and scaled skins. All this elements may be a part of Trundle but also overload his aspect. It’s surprising then that his hair seems so dry and clean. Furthermore, his depiction is a bit sketchy: from the proportions to the shading it all seems forced to be rough. Ultimately, the piece is consistent and manages a look that approximates the one displayed in-game. Nonetheless, it’s a piece that does its job but doesn’t make Trundle exciting; it’s just content with showing decay.

Conclusion: Traditional Trundle is a rather nice present to say farewell to the classic Cursed Troll. The refined aspect is well done mixing flesh and skin without exaggerations. The club is also polished yet remains brutal and crude. Additionally, the ragged clothes fit Trundle even if they stick to his classic style. It’s also nice to hear his former voice and see his decaying abilities as they work a good deal towards rounding the theme. In general, it’s a nice layer of polish for the Cursed Troll.
Unfortunately, the particles mix ice with decay and so the skin seems a touch incomplete. For instance: Pillar of Ice erupts surrounded by snow, while Subjugate starts with ice particles and then switches them for green ones; though the enemy remains frosted. This is a real pity as the skin it’s a near perfect gift for nostalgic players. In its current form it’s a vastly pleasing skin for those that remain attached to the Cursed Troll. However, the visual glitches stain the clean aesthetic. In the end, it’s definitely a good skin but also deserving of some indispensable finishing touches.

Constable Trundle
Constable Trundle Splash Art Constable Trundle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Trundle as a low rank police officer.
Model: New model for Trundle, his club and Pillar of Ice.
Particles: New particles for Pillar of Ice and his auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Behind, a fuzzy explosion that covers the modern, almost futuristic city skyline. In the front, two figures advance forward careless about the havoc happening. It seems unexpected that two serious, uniformed figures of authority would be so indifferent. In fact, it doesn’t fit their bearings to behave like B movie heroes.
On the bright side, their appearance is clear though sketchy and blurry away from their faces. Besides, it’s strange for a constable to appear more imposing than a captain. In spite of their rank, Trundle seems to be the central figure and Volibear the sidekick.
Ultimately, this shared piece is enough to accomplish the spotlight objective yet it seems like not much thought went into its composition. It’s a splash art that looks good but that doesn’t make much sense.

Conclusion: Drawing from the classic look of the British bobby, uniform inaccuracies notwithstanding, Constable Trundle finds some common ground for the adaptation. The traditional reticence on firearms allows Trundle to effectively portray a British police officer. Even some of his quotes reinforce the mix of bestial law enforcement; as long as he only mentions smashing and crushing.
The compromises made to adapt Trundle manage a cartoony feel that makes the idea appealing and distract from the rough edges; like the ridiculous beard. The most notorious of those is the ice particles that remain despite the good changes to Pillar of Ice and his auto-attack.
Ultimately, Constable Trundle is a funny skin with a distinct appeal. It’s far from the skin that best displays Trundle but as a diversion it surely is attractive.

Worldbreaker Trundle
Worldbreaker Trundle Splash Art Worldbreaker Trundle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Trundle as a Mayan warrior.
Model: New model for Trundle, his club and Pillar of Ice. New blue glow for Trundle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A heavy sky with a dim Sun can do little to aid the poor sailors that see themselves before titans of inconceivable might. Waves crash, ships break, despair assails and only doom is certain for the few remaining boats. All in all, it’s an interesting setting for the apparition of these two colossal figures.
Speaking of which, Nautilus sees his lower body omitted with arms and anchor blurred but his chest and head eclipse the skies with the magnitude of his size. The immensity is well communicated though the effect of his large frame over the sunlight isn’t reflected on his armour. The plates are evenly lit and even show highlights at the top despite the Sun being behind him. His colour palette also seems rather limited and similar to the skies. Still the sense of unimaginable proportions and sinister appearance make the portrayal appealing.
Trundle clashes with the rest of the piece due to his intense blue colour. It seems to come out of nowhere yet the disruption makes sense and the lighting is very well done. The lower body is, again, fully ignored and the back looks too dim; though it could be because of his friend’s presence before the Sun. His body emits its own light with a bright right arm, arm and horns. The malevolent visage is eloquent like the consequences of a simple splash of his hand on the seas. His headdress and club look quite dim, and the latter also diffuse, though there’s enough detail to get an idea of their look. The headdress also has some timid but appealing reflections. The dripping water from his club, left arm and horns is a good touch but, unfortunately, looks sketchy.
All things considered, this is a piece with a wonderful setting that is taken advantage of; for the most part. The portrayals of both Nautilus and Trundle are uneven with large portions of their body showing inferior quality to others. Also their enormous bodies don’t cast the shadows one would expect when they stand before the Sun. It’s not that the effect isn’t noticeable but that it simply isn’t present; which is a wasted opportunity to add to the scale of the event. Regardless, this is an interesting spotlight of a couple of massive Worldbreakers.

Conclusion: With a lot of blue skin in display to the point of showing glowing lines this is a simple re-model that conceals Trundle’s unique features under a richly ornamented helmet. The blue body hints at a supernatural nature that is kept only as a suggestion. The large tusks protruding from under the helmet may come out of the ghost’s mouth yet they could just as well belong to the helmet.
The wristbands and anklebands are quite simple with only minor decoration. The loincloth includes some gold but again follows the sober style of the bands. It’s only the impressively carved helmet with distinct layers of plates that stands out alongside the club. With its ornamental design it surely catches the eye thanks to the carved faces and stacked shape. The new Pillar of Ice receives tiered sides with stairs so as to resemble Mayan pyramids like Kukulkán’s Temple. It’s a mild but welcome change that could’ve been better as a full reference.
Adding it all together, the only salient characteristics are the helmet and club with the Pillar of Ice as a lesser but valid change. The ghostly appearance doesn’t convince and as an ice warrior it would be out of place. Still, for a bit of Mayan culture on the Troll King it could be said that Worldbreaker Trundle offer something worthwhile.

Conclusion

Trundle’s release skins are rather nice as they offer appealing concepts with adequate executions. All of his skins suffer from frosty remnants in the form of his classic abilities but as far as looks go they work. In essence, his skins have rough edges but still are good choices.

Constable Trundle might be the best option as it manages to present a charming version of a bobby in the guise of a troll. The skin isn’t as perfectly developed as it could be but the result conveys its theme well enough.

Lil’ Slugger Trundle is a convincing and nice baseball batter while Junkyard Trundle presents himself as an attractive wasteland mutant. In either case the theme isn’t developed much past the model yet they are certainly well done. In the end, Trundle fans will find both skins interesting as long as they can excuse their issues.

Worldbreaker Trundle is, largely, an ineffective ghost warrior geared with a particularly interesting helmet and club. Those Mayan-inspired elements, with some help from Pillar of Ice, are the main features that make the skin worthwhile. There isn’t much on offer but what little is of note is well done.

  1. Thank you for great reviews to every champion, it has been very interesting following this page.

I really think they should have updated all Splash Arts for Trundle, since they are completly not fitting with the new models. Also, if they would have put more work into Slugger and Junkyard they could have gottwn more sold. The ice theme just doesn’t fit them, but they are still nice ingame. It’s just Frozen Domain which is the greatest problem.

    • Not at all, it’s been a very interesting trip. Hope you stay because we plan to keep improving the site and add more useful content. Also, feedback is always appreciated.

We agree that Trundle needs new splash arts, just ask Nidalee. Besides, the classic ice particles aren’t fitting in any of the skins. Still, they are more evident and disappointing in Traditional Trundle as they could’ve fully recreated the old decaying effects. Indeed, the models are good but the mishmash of concepts is a bit puzzling.

  2. Both Junkyard Trundle and Lil’ Slugger Trundle have new pillars.

    • Actually, Traditional Trundle also has a new model for his Pillar of Ice. However, only Traditional Trundle has new particles for it: the other skins keep his classic ice particles. That’s why the new model for Pillar of Ice is included in model changes only.

We plan to explain everything better in a review FAQ so that skin changes can be better appreciated and understood. Still, thanks for the notice.

      • That is not true for Lil’ Slugger Trundle, I just tested it in a custom. The classic skin has blue particles, the Lil’ Slugger skin has brown. I don’t own the Junkyard Trundle skin, but the particles for his pillar seem to be brown as well.

Perhaps you should consider mentioning that Lil’ Slugger’s pillar is a golden trophy, I think that might be interesting for people considering which skin to get.

  3. Traditional Trundle now has flame particles instead of the ice on his club. You should take a look on him again.

  4. I love this website and I go on it before I buy any skins!

1 Question? When do you think the next Trundle skin will come out and what do you think it will be?
    Keep up the good work

    • Glad that you like the site.

We have no idea when and what a new skin for Trundle will be released and be about. Regardless, there’s little doubt that he needs something new. After all, the visual upgrade seems to have been a controversial fix more than a refinement on his aspect.

  5. so i have all the other trundle skins, including traditional. but i dont own lil slugger. and the only reason id want it is for completion’s sake, is it worth my money to get it.

    • It’s a joke or funny skin but if you are a dedicated Trundle fan it can be an extra option to outfit the troll. The advantage is that Lil’ Slugger is rather cheap so if you can get it on sale it wouldn’t take much RP to unlock it. It would probably be the best way to get the skin; especially if you have some doubts.

If you also like baseball it’s another thing to consider. If that’s not the case then it’s a modern look for Trundle with a clear sporty style. It’s a cheap skin but still it’s recommended to make sure that you like it and that it’ll see use.

  6. Hi Zero, I love this webpage (I always pay it a visit before buying any skin :3) and I also love the troll. With this said, I would like to know: which are your thoughts on Constable Trundle? It seems pretty nice for it’s price (plus it makes Trundle look BADASS), but I wanted to hear your thoughts first.

    • For its price it seems reasonable enough. It’s not a serious skin nor is it astounding but it seems to deliver enough. It might be better left for a sale because it’s not really the skin that Trundle has been waiting for. However, if you do like the police theme then it’s not a bad option.

  7. Do you have any ideas or thoughts when Traditional Trundle may be purchasable again? I find the skin almost perfect for Trundle. Also would you mind doing skin reviews for the Spirit Fire Brand, Cosmic Reaver Kassadin, and Demon Vi? I highly enjoy your skin reviews 😉

    • Glad that you like the reviews.

As soon as that trio of skins is released we’ll have a review for them. We prefer to check the final product before giving our final thoughts on a skin.

With regard to Traditional Trundle it might be purchasable again at some special event or, with some luck, at a Legacy Vault sale; though that hasn’t happened yet. It was given for free to players that owned Trundle when the visual upgrade came but nothing about a future sale was indicated.

Considering its legacy label we wouldn’t discard a future sale on the skin. On the other hand, there’s been no hint as to when that could be so we’d advise to keep an eye on sales and events. Much patience may be required though.

  8. What do you think is the best available trundle skins. Constable, lil slugger and junkyard

    • Both Constable and Lil’ Slugger try to be funny costumes but are actually a change of clothes that go out of the game fantasy. That’s not necessarily bad but as Junkyard doesn’t fit that well either with it modern style. Regardless, Junkyard has more interesting visuals though the three skins are quite similar in terms of what they offer.

Ultimately, Constable Trundle is more polished, as it’s a newer skin, so it has a little advantage there. As diversions from the unexploited core they are good but the truth is that there isn’t such a big difference between the skins. It’s certainly a matter of personal preference as they are technically quite similar. The more refined Constable look may stand out but only a bit.

  9. What do you think of the new splasharts for Trundle, Tristana, and Nidalee? Will the reviews be updated soon?

    • From what we’ve seen they are an improvement. The old ones were really showing their age though some had some nice personality whereas the new ones tends to be all shiny but not always going into what makes the identity of each champion interesting. We’ll have to review them to give a more precise analisys. There are over a hundred of splash arts to review so it’ll take a time but we’ll get to review them all eventually.

  10. You really need to update this, his splash arts got updated ages ago!!!

    • Over a hundred splash arts were updated and we need to rewrite their reviews. We’re progressively reassessing the splashes but we also have to keep up with new content; especially skins. We’ll try to have everything up to date as soon as we can. Be aware that it’ll take some time, though. Sorry for the inconvenience.
