The Lord of the mansion gazed at the night sky and saw only stars and a full Moon. He found neither the answers nor the significance that he had sought. On the one hand it did disappoint him but he was also expecting it. This wasn’t the first time and he feared that no other result was possible. There was nothing he could do differently, the ultimatum had been clear. Surely he wasn’t unused to threats and tense situations. He’s had money problems in the past and even risked losing his mansion, the legacy of his family. However, this was something entirely different.
The fact that what had happened was so strange prevented him from seeking advice in any friend or acquaintance of his. What would anyone think if he told them that he woke up in the middle of the night to find a being from the stars on his balcony? “Hello, your mansion is situated over a transportation device of ours. We have a scheduled arrival in a week which will disintegrate all property standing over the underground station. You should pack up and leave as soon as possible. Have a good night.” Just like that: casually and without much fuzz. If he could say anything about the canine alien it was that he surely was an example of self-possession.
No matter how he looked at things he simply couldn’t move the mansion, let alone try to salvage the architectural legacy and relics of his family. It was a situation where the absence of valid alternatives led to complete inaction; a matter he regretted greatly. After all, tomorrow would elapse the full week and he had, effectively, done nothing but stand around and think. He didn’t sleep that night. His mind was a blur of worry mixed with wild ideas and impossible options. While he was collected enough to abstain from desperation the situation certainly would’ve made it understandable.
Nothing happened during the day. This confused him. He hadn’t actually been told of a precise time for the explosion or whatever that was to happen. It intensely tensed his nerves but he stayed calm. By evening he gave the servants leave and stayed alone expecting the inevitable. What if he were to wield the large heirloom axe against the alien? If stories were to be believed, he would be disintegrated before he took a single step. Looking at the stars he sighed: “What could I possibly do to prevent his tragedy from ruining the legacy of my forefathers?”
A beam of light appeared in front of him and he recognised the annoyed canine alien that materialised in a bright, silver suit. “I just heard that you have some reservations about the disintegration of your home. We can assure you that the process will be swift and completely painless. You can stay to watch if you can.” “I don’t want to watch. I don’t want my house erased from existence. Centuries of history are contained in this house and I’m the only one that can preserve them!” The answer to such sincere emotion was a long-winded citation of conditions and exceptions that made the Lord think that he was in front of a dog-faced clerk. “When faced with long arguments be brief in your answers.” His father’s words crossed his mind and he simply gave a monotonous yet sonorous: “No.”
A second beam lit the area to the left of the muzzled alien and a scaly, broad alien appeared alongside with a grin as wide as his shoulders and a similar fashion sense. The understanding hoarse voice contrasted his colleague’s mellow declarations. “I’m Transport Supervisor in this region. I hear that there are some problems with the use of this transportation device, Sir.” “There is, I don’t want the house destroyed.” “But you signed the contract, check here, here and here.” “That’s… my grand-grand-grand-father’s signature.” The crocodile murmured with his large mouth full of sharp teeth into the furry, shifting left ear of the dog. He though he heard something like: “Don’t tell me you didn’t check the records to verify the ownership of the property.”
They chatted in a low voice for a while and then both faced him with nervous, toothy smiles. The Supervisor spoke: “Sir, there’s been a regrettable misunderstanding so we won’t be using your transportation device in the foreseeable future. We’d appreciate if you could pass by our offices to check the necessary papers and update the situation of your property with regards to our services. Here’s my card, we’ll call you soon. Thanks for your time and excuse the inconvenience.” They disappeared in two beams of light. The Lord looked up at the sky and saw two stars glint alongside the round Moon. This time he saw something else, too: hope.
