Introduction: Fishing for Results
“Have you ever tried fishing on a pool? You only catch what you put in there.” The guard stayed immobile yet attentive to his surroundings. He was, though, finding it difficult to ignore the white-coated figure before him. His little frame shifted as he interspersed sensible reflections and deranged mumblings. Finally, and thankfully for the guard, he proclaimed “science will see us all into a new age!” and disappeared into his lab. The grey, dented metal door closed behind him with a blunt slam; right in front of the guard. It was just opposite his post in the main hall. He had heard many strange sounds being bellowed through that coated steel barrier. He wondered: what would he fear today?
He was far from a tame man. A glance at his face showed the scars of a veteran and the worn visage of stoic resistance. Many times had he faced visions that defied his imagination and yet he had always survived. It came as quite a shock when he was reassigned to guard a simple door in some institute. Over the months, he had come to reassess his position on the matter. He had seen many stern faces twist and strong minds crack under the pressure of this post. Guards kept changing rapidly, always disappearing without warning. Whatever it was that they were researching he wanted to know as little as possible.
It was fortunate, on retrospective, to be assigned to guard the main entrance and not to be part of the test subjects. Some soldiers had that assigned: he never heard again of them. The little man appeared with his hairy face and huge grin. He hopped to the main entrance and left. He left the lab door open. The guard tried to avert his eyes, to centre his attention on the hall’s effusive decoration, to distract his mind with other preoccupations. His curiosity trumped his desperate sense of self-preservation. He gazed into the dark maw of the door. Initially, he didn’t recognise the blurry shapes.
As his steps unconsciously brought him nearer the door and his eyes adapted to the low light the shapes took form, familiar form. Colleagues, fellows soldiers, brothers in arms transformed into mockeries of living beings. “Yes, yes, most satisfactory that you volunteer for my next round of experiments. Don’t worry, I’m sure the next batch of tests will prove a rotund success. Come, come, we are wasting precious time.” That very moment another guard took post inside the hall by the main entrance. He surely was disappointed to have been assigned such a lowly duty but his friend had told him that it could’ve been worse.
