Introduction: Technological Storm
It all started far in the north. It was said that a storm erased all the population there and if there was anybody far from unprepared for frightful weather it was them. In spite of all their experience they were summarily wiped out. Some apprehensive ones escaped and some lucky ones survived; though neither would call themselves such. The few valiant rescue parties that dared to reach into the devastation simply refused to give details. In few words one put it like this: “Everything was erased like a child mad at a ruined drawing.”
It obviously didn’t take long for opportunists to take advantage of such a tragedy. Whoever wasn’t afraid enough to buy into new climate protection schemes was simply venturing into the north to salvage whatever was left. Either was disappointed and left looking at empty hands when their need was direst. While the former ended up deceived when some mild storms arrived the latter ended up spending more than they were able to reclaim from the snow. That didn’t stop the most serious companies from creating revolutionary and expensive solutions to offer. It neither prevented adventurers with fire in their hearts to defy the chill grasp of the north.
“This isn’t one of those solutions they offer to armour your house. It armours yourself to be impervious to all harm. No matter where you go, no weather or living being will be able to defy your new self.” If the great campaigns hadn’t been enough to promote cybernetic updates then fear had surely given the cyber-conglomerates a big, helping hand that they vehemently fed to the psychosis of the masses. Many weren’t convinced by the new visions of a future utopia where illness and death were a thing of the past.
“Everything has a reason to be. We are to better ourselves by challenging our limitations not by simply removing them.” “Who would really choose the difficult path over the easy route? Why would you?” answered the companies. Perhaps it would be those adventurers with fire in their hearts but not many more. Transhumans were here to stay, forever; literally. They’d watch generations come and go with their humanity precariously hanging from a thin thread, ever threatening to fall and break apart.
What would they become once machine took over human? Not much that was recognisable by whoever have once known them. But now, there’s little we can do about it; unless, you dare to take a different path. Reclaim your humanity from the tyranny of the machines. Stand firm for organic life. Reject cyber-augments, choose gene-updates. Your new you, evolved from you.
