Introduction: The Path of the Sword
It was a lovely cascade. The crystalline water glinted under the sunlight like a jewel. It was refreshing, with just the right temperature and the taste, simply invigorating. Little by little the river started to become red. In the shore, a body bled with a distorted face of anguish over a deep cut that had almost cut the torso in two. The one responsible looked with a plain face at the scene. He didn’t care about the cascade, the corruption of the water or the life taken. He simply had prevailed as the best. His sword dripped blood but he never cleaned it, he never sheathed it. What with anyway? For the life he had chosen he should have his sword ready at every moment.
The path was green, the vegetation lush and the colours vibrant. Life seemed to explode between the generous water sources and the rich soils. There weren’t people to be seen but occasionally one would be approached. His clothes were fine and, while he didn’t look like a nobleman, he surely didn’t look like he was in need. The bandits barely noticed the unsheathed sword but if they did they didn’t care: five versus one? They didn’t need to say anything. They just looked at each other, smiled and charged. Each was cut in two parts, not always equal in size, which hit the grass with a few thuds. The remains were of no interest to him, he simply kept on walking sword in hand dripping blood, without looking behind.
The path led to a small town with a temple at the other side. He passed by with people staring or fleeing, the ones that knew what he intended. A few valiant ones ran to warn the temple about the new visitor. When he reached the temple’s gate he found who he had come to face. Dressed in bright colours and alien shapes, his blade glowed with an energy that seemed out of this world. He didn’t say a word, he understood that nothing would’ve dissuaded a man walking his path. He simply put his sword behind him in an open stance that seemed defiant. The visitor didn’t waste time getting his sword ready before him.
The clash of swords was constant as a blacksmith forging a masterpiece. Their moves were art, agile yet full of power, each hit ended with both sword meeting in mid-air, never reaching their target but producing such a beautiful rhythm. There came a halt, they looked at each other’s eyes. They had studied each other enough. The time to take risks had come. They would make an attempt to cut through the other’s defences and, naturally, their body. The visitor thrust his sword forward and leapt over his opponent. Landing behind, he stabbed backwards without seeing but noticed he had missed. Had he miscalculated his position? He didn’t need to turn to realise his mistake for he was staring at the glowing blade making a deep cut through his heart.
The visitor received a burial in the town’s small graveyard. It wasn’t the first time a visitor had died there but it was unusual. The townspeople didn’t attend the burial but the people from the temple were all there. “Will they ever stop coming?” said one monk. With sword glowing in hand the man in bright colours shook his head. “Eventually, all masters of the sword walk the same path.” It was a brief affair without much emotion and a bit of disappointment at human nature. As they walked, the man in bright colours kept his sword in his hand. He had it by his side when meditating as well as dinner and finally when the time came to sleep. The sword was always by his side, never sheathed, and most always in hand. It was the price for walking such a path.
