Introduction: A Brushstroke of Genius
Between darkness and flames they looked around to a grim fate. They would either be burned alive or devoured by the all-consuming emptiness. They tried to escape but they were easily cornered: it was everywhere. Now they could only fight. “What good are bolts? It’ll only eat them.” “You can’t really fight fire with fire.” They could exchange targets but: “Bolts against fire? I’ll just make matches.” “Fire against darkness? It would just be throwing flares.” Their weapons were of no use. Could there be something else to fight with?
They thought about the experiment gone awry, of the chemist laughing as flames and darkness erased his convulsing body. It had been a nasty sight. The lab was mostly consumed but there were still a few elements in the distance they could make use of. “No random shooting, I’m not causing any more havoc.” “Let me see, some light there would help. Shoot between the flasks and I’ll light the bolts.” The blazing bolts bit the wall and made an impromptu chain of lights that illuminated the varied array of chemicals in the remaining parts of shelves.
“There, mix the blue liquid with the white one.” “Opposites would work, eh?” Her bolts flew keen through the lashes of flames and the corrupting touch of darkness. The flask broke and the liquids fell. They dripped and trickled in various directions until two thin tendrils touched and the whole of the liquids fused in a blinding, liquid light. The flames were snuffed and the darkness scorched to grey ash.
They partially opened their eyes and eventually realised that around them lay a surreal picture part consumed and part melted. The laboratory still stood but with missing and smeared blotches. They managed to escape through the ashen parts but always staying away from the unexplainably untouched, pristine areas that stood out as if hand-painted with bright colours.
