Introduction: Arcane Link

The whole laboratory exploded in blue arcane magic. The several bookcases exhibited dots of surreal scenery like little portals leading into impossible worlds. Some weren’t so impossible, one showed a tomb in the middle of a desert. The statues guarding the place stoically suffered the sunlight and proudly displayed their rich decorations. There was more than a little gold on them so bandits would find them a rather appealing target; if they only knew. The arcanist wasn’t in the mood for greed though: there were many other portals to see.

Whereas the desert portal was roughly in the middle of the bookcase the one on the extreme right showed clean tundra with snow of an unbelievably pure white. The image closed in on a glimmering dot that darted between dimmer dots. As details were revealed the arcanist could see the frostblades dancing around the warrior. She moved with supernatural skill as the bandits proved no threat to her; easy practice at best. Speaking of the devil, there was another portal that caught his eye between the two he had seen.

This one showed a hulking brute carrying some sort of club and wearing colourful clothes. The beast approached a group of travelling musicians and battered the floor with his weapon. They stopped frightened and stared at the brute. The arcanist thought fast: each portal was mapped on the surface of the bookcase as if it were the surface of the planet. If he could determine where they were he could help them. The portals didn’t collaborate with any extra information, there were no labels on the edges and they acted as simple windows with a water-like surface.

The creature rose high and lifted his club over his head. His shadow extended over the caravan, then he charged. In desperation, the arcanist threw a bomb on the portal. It didn’t fully reach its centre but exploded on the edge with some magic splashed into the tundra portal. When the magic dissipated he stared at the frostblade cutting the club to ribbons and then continued its activity on the beast itself. “Arcane magic can connect them. People can teleport between them!” It was time for more experiments, definitely of the explosive kind; those were the ones he liked best.
