“No matter how bright the stars shine, the night is always dark.” It wasn’t a reassuring thought but it was realistic. The crime, the cruelty, the evil: no matter how much hope they wanted to inspire it always seemed too little. The night was young, though, perhaps there was still hope. Perhaps, but not now. Buildings started to burn and she flew around the crystalline skyscrapers towards the flames. Rampaging in the street was a burning tree. Someone had the temerity of attacking one of these ancient trees and they simply had had enough.
Her gusts of wind were strong and they intensified until the tree was free of flames and partially frozen. The tree slowed down, walked sleepily to its place in the square and stood still, back to its slumber. The damage hadn’t been huge to either city or tree but she knew that the blame would fall on the weakest link in the chain. Whatever the media and the politicians ended up doing it probably wouldn’t help things. They flew around the city but as midnight approached activity ceased and it was time to go back home.
The following day it was just another normal day, as days always started. Being one with a long tenure helping the city she felt an obligation to follow every mission to its bitter end. She went to the square in plain clothes. Hope said the ancient trees remained but she was already imagining the machines ready to uproot them and reality didn’t disappoint. In front of the square there were those machines. She walked nearer and saw a thick human chain, everyone holding hands, protecting the whole square. She smiled and joined the chain. Perhaps the night was dark but the day could shine brighter still.
