Introduction: From Friend to Foe
She walked through the city and saw the ruined buildings and the levelled streets. The battle had been brutal. There were no corpses, though, not with disintegrating weapons in use. They had been banned for centuries but when the Resistance proved a bigger match than the Empire expected prohibitions became lax in the name of freedom. That is, the freedom to do everything the Empire told. She lived outside the Empire, in a Kingdom where fights were a thing of the past, entertainment at best with extensive security measures. She thought that it was a good thing that the ancient arts of battle hadn’t been completely lost. It was a tradition that had become essential since the Empire had set its sights on the Kingdom.
She hadn’t met any resistance fighter until yesterday but that didn’t stop the Empire from accusing the Kingdom of harbouring and supporting them. There was nothing to negotiate: the only option was surrender to the Empire. They didn’t expect the Kingdom to fight, much less bring the fight to their own planets. Her conscience and role, as princess of the Kingdom, in the battles forced her to see the aftermath in every planet. It was sad, it should’ve never come to this: “Why didn’t they want to listen?” She couldn’t understand why the Empire would see them as an enemy when they had always been trade partners. It was all over. The Empire was not to get any more of their ore but they really needed it. They had become a strategic objective.
Back at the ship she kept on pondering without reaching a satisfying answer to the whole situation. Perhaps there was none. The Empire was sustaining great loses. Among other things they hadn’t mentioned the Empire there was a way of negating their ore-based technology. “Another reason to take on the Kingdom?” Too late anyway. The Empire was defenceless against them and the Rebellion had become a valued ally as planets were freed from the Empire and joined a republic of which the Kingdom was already a member. “Was it necessary so much death for a good change?” Perhaps not but it wasn’t really a choice. What mattered was making sure the Empire hurt no more people. The odyssey of the Republic was just beginning, she just hoped the start would be the most difficult time in a, hopefully, long history of peace. She thought for a moment and came to the conclusion that she really doubted it.
