Introduction: The Wisdom of the Doll
“What a peculiar object to find here on the sand.” The traveller picked up the wind-up doll. “It’s funny, I’ve never seen any like you. Where are you from, Miss?” The doll remained still and the traveller realised that she needed a little bit of love to energise her new friend. “Okay, here we go.” She turned the key at the back of the doll and waited. Nothing happened so she simply put it in her sack and resumed walking. The Sun kept on shining and she kept on walking. Soon enough her steps had taken her to a town.
It didn’t take many steps to realise that it had been abandoned. There was a terrible stench and nothing seemed to have seen human presence in a long time. She tentatively tried to walk forward when the sack hanging from her belt started to shake. The traveller opened it and the doll looked at her. “What’s up little one? This doesn’t look like a nice place to be, don’t you think? But we need somewhere to hide away from the Sun.” “Not here. Run.” The traveller was perplexed by the response but in the desert she had seen her fair share of fantastic.
She took a step back and the doll shook again. “Run, now.” She turned and ran away from the town. After a while, she looked back. A hot breeze ran through and it made the image of the town shake, revealing a monstrous maw in its place; full of thin fangs that repeated in line until they disappeared in a dark throat. “How did you know?” “East, follow the Sun.” “Okay, you do know your way around here.” She started walking with the doll in her hand. The doll moved her limbs slowly from time to time, as if stretching after a long sleep. “East is home.” “Alright, home we go, then.”
