Introduction: The Machine of Lightning
“Are you sure that thing will be fine down there? If it explodes we are all going into Davy Jones’s Locker.” “It’ll be fine, that chunk of metal will fetch a pretty set of pieces of eight. Where else do you want to place it? The Captain’s cabin? We’ll get to the locker faster that way, hah!” The sailors left the wooden crate in the ship’s hold and joined the others. The ship was practically ready to set sail and they quickly moved through waves into the oceans. The sea was calm, for now, they all knew she was a capricious lady so it didn’t come as a surprise when dark clouds loomed on the horizon and thunder came a while after far flashes of light.
The storm hit the Dark Valkyrie like a hammer on a blacksmith’s anvil. Lightning threatened the naked mast as the sails had been removed far in advance of the tantrum we were all in. “Hold on to something cowards and stop shivering. Would you rather the legends tell of your fiery death in battle or your pathetic fall in a little storm?” The Captain had an ensemble of distinct corsairs as her trusted lieutenants and we didn’t seem very impressed by the shaking and stirring of ship and waters, we had to set an example. We were holding tightly, though, like everyone else including the Captain. When lightning struck the ship everyone expected the worst. Luckily, it went straight into the hold and didn’t cause a fire. Unluckily, it awoke something that wasn’t expected to have a life.
The best way I can describe it is as some sort of machine, like the ones used for printing. This one had glowing eyes and a strange animal-like shape. It queerly stumbled on deck and, to everyone’s astonishment received a few more bolts to the head but its metallic hide didn’t seem to mind; its eyes glowed brighter after each one actually. It’s difficult to explain what happened. Everyone was fascinated by that machine walking around the deck and swallowing lighting like rum. Not once did we have to worry about it approaching any of us though some sailors near it swear that it was mumbling something. By the time the storm was over the thing returned to the hold and stayed in the open crate until we reached shore of a lone island where we took some respite and checked the ship for damage.
Last thing we saw of it: the machine was walking into the woods at night conveniently lighting its way with its very own glowing eyes. That night we heard a loud boom and a blue explosion in the middle of the island, at the highest point of its lone cliff. The Captain went with her ensemble to find out what it had been next morning. We followed the prints of the feet, to call them something, for hours until they abruptly disappeared right before a charred line on the floor. Where that thing had gone was a mystery that even the Captain hasn’t been able to decipher and she’s not one for leaving problems unsolved. Next week the Dark Valkyrie has her course set for a special visit. It’s said that there’s someone that knows many answers to many questions; but word says that they are the ramblings of madness. We’ll see if we can find something about the Lightning Machine there; as the Captain dubbed it. The Captain sure hopes so and so do I.
