Introduction: A Young Night

In her manor, dim lights, an exquisite vintage wine and the warm reassurance of an ideal fireplace. It’s comfort in all capitals and she knows it. She also knows it won’t last. The night is young and her duty can’t be ignored; she won’t ignore it. The call comes, it always does. Last week it was a fiend of magma torching the city. More recently a toxic demon spread plague and disease. That one was rather disgusting, actually. She preferred the predictable but always eye-catching displays of fire power rather than the wanton spread of illness. Good thing she had enough purifying bolts for that thing and that it dissolved in the end. She would’ve hated to dig a grave for it; like she had to do with the werewolf, big guy that one.

She was getting distracted. She drank some wine and enjoyed the warmth from the fire wondering how long now. Now that she thought about it, there had been an assassin in town. There had been some shadowy sights and reports of some specific dignitaries that had lost their lives, cut to bits. Sounded like a challenge but her expertise was required for monsters beyond this world; where angels fear to tread, she smiled at the reference. It was an unusually quiet night, though. By now she should’ve been either called for a task or received a report of no activity. She stood up, wine in hand and peered into the dark corridor. A blade swung down on her face but she was too used to the deviousness of demons to think much of such an attack.

She dodged backwards and moved to the side of the door with her back on the wall. The blade tried through the wall but with little luck: she licked thick and strong walls. The next attempt showed the crimson-clad assassin in full. “And me wondering if you’ll be a good challenge… let’s see boy.” The assassin simply threw daggers that ruined the paint of the wall. She rolled to a side and threw the wine on his face. She grabbed the bottle from the table, dived over the armchair and struke the assassin’s lower back. Blades answered but she was already by the fireplace grabbing a couple pokers. Dual-wielding those she parried daggers and sent the assassin back to the door. “You leave or you die, boy. I’ve buried much worse than you.”

The boy either didn’t get the message or thought too much of his own skill, as she meditated over his corpse. So young and so stupid; well, youth does that to you. The taunt had sent him rampaging forward in a flurry of blades that she dodged with only a bit of effort, so that each poker easily found an arm to pierce. Sliding past him she grabbed the daggers from the wall and decorated his back up to the head with glinting metal. It wasn’t a pretty sight but she liked her corpses dead, well dead; not like that creature that refused to die no matter in how many pieces you cut it, so annoying. Anyway, she needed to clean now and she certainly wasn’t in the mood: such a good wine ruined. She exited the room playing with a dagger in one hand and the other with another in a reverse grip; in case anyone felt lucky. She had to check if anyone was left alive in the house and find replacements in short order if not. Her duty didn’t leave time for home chores and the night was still young.
