Introduction: Dragon’s Dinner
“Are you sure this is the way?” “Don’t worry, I have years of experience in this we’re surely about to arrive.” The kept walking through the dense foliage. Each broken branch made greener their armour plates which already felt uncomfortable enough without the smell of sap. “This is enough. If you don’t know where we are going we better turn back.” “No, don’t worry, it’s just a little while longer.” “For an expert on dragons your tracking skills are quite lacking.” A stern face stared at a one that tried to disguise a little imprecision.
“I’m just a bit tired, it’s the heat and all that. Not used to it.” “How wouldn’t you be used to heat battling dragons?” Something wasn’t right with this expert dragon hunter according to the face of the, now greener and a bit red, soldier. “You have no idea about where we are or where we are going, do you?” “Well, this all can be relative.” “No, it’s not, you do or you do not.” He almost grabbed the liar by the throat but the size difference made him reconsider. Looking up, with spear ready to charge, he stated: “I’ll have your head for this.” “Then maybe you aren’t the right person to help me on my mission. A pity, I assure you.”
The hit came not without warning but, like an avalanche, you could only stare at it coming without escape. The soldier fell on the ground with the world spinning all around him. “In the tundra, we know the value of camaraderie despite differences. You warm-people have it too easy to appreciate survival.” He started to walk away but the soldier staggered to his feet: “You talk to me about camaraderie? I’ve seen more friends die at the hand of filth like you than the places you’ve been.” “I’m quite sure your enemies can’t be as cruel as the cold embrace of the north, kid.”
Kid? That was it, he charged again with his spear, mostly, aiming at where he detected a large blur that spouted lies. He missed him but the spear went deep into the bark of a tree and he fell at the sudden stop. “I will find you liar. I will make you pay.” his voice was distorted and his ears rumbled. “Sorry kid, I’m a bit busy at the moment.” He strained his eyes to focus on what was before him. After some effort he saw the big liar holding his large shield against the cone of flames coming from a dragon’s maw. “What the?” “I told you we were near.”
The soldier tried to steady himself and, with some effort, freed the spear from the tree’s clasp. He ran forward but a big hand grabbed him and pushed towards the protection of the shield. In a few moments the area where he was and would’ve been was scorched. “You have a few things to learn kid.” “Don’t call me kid and what are you waiting for? Kill that beast.” “We aren’t here to kill it, I’m not a real dragon hunter.” “I knew it.” “You had no idea and all creatures deserve to be protected.” “You think that thing needs protection?”
“It wouldn’t be so scared if not. They are intelligent, noble creatures I’m sure we can reach an understanding. “Excuse me, scaly and fiery one, would you mind stopping for a minute and listening?” “What do you want more than death? You want death? Here have it!” The dragon redoubled its flaming effort. “Your diplomacy is nonexistent.” “So, kid?” “Excuse me, dragon, why not stop for a truce and discuss this. We aren’t here to kill you but to protect you. My friend here says you are scared.” “You think I’m scared? I will show you fear…” “Enough, scaly one. Neither of us wants to die so, why don’t we discuss this over a nice steak? My friend here is a fine hunter.” The dragon’s face reflected the interests of its empty stomach. The dragon hunter leaned to the soldier and whispered: “I knew you’d come in handy sooner or later.”
