Introduction: Flare Up
She woke up with a cold chill running down her spine. The icy sweat running through her back made her get up to the bathroom and clean her body with a towel dipped in warm water. “Great treatment for a heat wave.” she mumbled to herself. The mirror reflected her disdain and discomfort. She almost shivered despite the ridiculous temperature. She got into her training clothes and sat in the dining room. “That’s sleep for tonight.” She looked through the window after procuring herself a warm cup of chocolate and distinguished the first shy rays of the sleepy Sun. “Good day, today I’m looking at you get up.” She took a sip.
The training went by without note. Surely, she hadn’t scaled the heights but she didn’t plumb the depths either. As always, the problem came in the afternoon when she sat down behind her desk and the memories and thoughts burst the banks of her mental river. She remembered the same chill with the maw of the creature before her. To think that just minutes before it had been a member of her group left her disconcerted. “How could she hide something so huge?” She managed to get some work done but the questions kept hammering at the doors of her mind and the hinges were about to give in.
“How could I know then?” Her daggers flew towards the unprotected chest of her former friend and she fell. The she saw the real horror: a nightmare so cold that it burnt the eyes, stung the nose, shattered the eardrums. It was a simple, semi-human shape; its familiar features made it all the more disgusting. She wasn’t one to be impressed by monsters but this time she was simply shocked to immobility. The blades were drawn and their clash left icy sparks that froze the ground. The thing or nightmare or something was right before her and she stared into deep, vacant eyes. “It will be worse soon…”
“No!” She heard the inhuman roar and the dark silhouette of her friend rising then descend with her maw open to engulf the whole of the nightmare. She belched flames but her stomach was cut open from the inside and the horror exited from her gaping belly covered in frost. “You are next. Breathe.” She barely had time to throw some daggers before she had to parry several attacks. She couldn’t cope, doubts, fear, hesitation crept into her mind. “Be weak, let go, it’s only a moment of disembowelment.” Her eyes caught glimpses of the scaly body of her friend behind the nightmare: she stopped fighting.
Her blades fell to the ground and she stared again into hollow eyes. The blades encircled her throat. “It’s better to open from the inside.” An explosion sent horror and victim to the ground and the flames run rampant against the ice. “Last trick.” The eyes finally closed under scaly eyelids. The flames didn’t rest: they lashed at the frozen nightmare. She grabbed a couple daggers, set them aflame and threw them on the empty eyes. “Now they have something in them.” She took two more and stabbed the body and arms until it fell immobile with blades deep within into where a heart would be. She rushed to the side of her friend but couldn’t get near: her body was ablaze.
She looked at the clock in front of her: it was well past time to leave. The return home was haunted by similar images. Every window was a look back into a possible choice not taken. The house was as hot as the outside but it felt meaningless. She changed clothes, grabbed a cup of hot chocolate and sat before the window to see the dark, spotted sky. With chocolate gone she kept pondering as the night brooded to midnight. In the distance she saw a huge torrent of flames flare up lighting the dark sky. She heard a familiar roar, straightened in her chair and smiled: “We’ll meet again, friend.”
