Introduction: Arcade Town
“This town ain’t big enough for the both of us.” “Then shoot, but don’t forget to aim first.” Bullets and pixels flew left and right making round and colourful holes on the town. A good couple, emptied cylinders afterwards the shootout reached a minor halt. “It is obvious that this contest can’t be decided by our ability with guns… but by our skill at aiming.” “We shall see.” Stern faces, twitching fingers and joysticks firmly grasped it was now a race for the highest score with only one place at the top.
“First, spear throwing. Let’s see how you do without bullets.” “You’re the one that should be worried, Miss Colourful.” The stages passed, normal enemies were quickly dispatched and bosses proved mere spongy resistance. Accuracy was over 90% for both, oscillating a bit but, always high. It was time for a ‘New Game+.’ The stages came again but now plagued by swarms of enemies. A missed shot meant an impressive dodge or game over.
Characters from all over the arcade gathered to stare at the screen as the two gunslingers mowed through legions of cannon fodder. Bosses tried but never succeded in stopping them; only a minor halt in the pixellated slaughter. The final boss appeared with its usual grim face and terrible powers. The screen shook from side to side under his might but neither player hesitated: they destroyed the creature. This time, it wasn’t the end. The second form emerged.
The first form had been a bit of a challenge but the second one was a real one. They danced around walls of bullets in mazes without predictable exit while showering the boss with their cyber-spears. Then it came: the instakill. The boss became invincible for a few seconds and detonated the entire screen. There was simply nothing they could’ve done. “Now this is personal.” “How dare this beast do something like that.” “We had a highscore!” “We’ll surpass it, here’s another coin; revenge will be ours.” Their continues simultaneously readied, the gunslingers reappeared ready to make the boss pay; no matter how many forms it had.
