Introduction: Perfection of the Kill
I see them: glowing lights on polished skin. A dash to a side, a mark on the target, a shot to start the party and a barrage to end it. I always watch their moves: precise, lethal, inhuman. They are the future or that’s what we are told. Others chose genes over electronics and also paved their own future beyond humanity. I didn’t choose but I was to be part of that future. A future where we could all be more than we were. Did we really need all this? Because this is all I’ve known and I don’t feel any bit special. Perhaps they do when the assault our villages and prune the world of obsolete organics; that’s what they say.
My mane flows in the breeze and I remember my furry, old friend when we were growing up, outside the city, and we didn’t have so many kinds of scars. “They call it science, we call it magic and they call it barbarism, we call it evolution. It all depends on whose perspective. If you place yourself behind everyone’s eyes you’ll see infinite truths.” “But, we have been genetically modified. We aren’t beasts, we know what’s science and what is beyond explanation.” I answered. “It doesn’t matter what you think you know but what they think they know. You see yellow lights and they see life. We see wild nature and they see savagery. It’s all a point of view.”
Looking at the efficiency of the cyborg brought to mind the many times we would train together. Repeating each sequence time and again, always trying to finely tune our execution into a perfect flow. These people only need to download a program into their brains and they are settled. But, without effort can they really appreciate the beauty of success? The machine was focused, centred on its target. She had nowhere to run, that cushion she held to her chest wasn’t going to protect her. Old was out and new was in, they also had their own sense of evolution; even if they didn’t want to admit it.
The obsolete doll stared at both barrels with an empty face. I jumped wrapped in my shroud of darkness and landed with one blade on each scapula. Sparks flew as metal ripped on metal with the impulse of my fall. I held my entire weight on the handles and kicked with both feet in the middle of the lumbar zone. The blades were free and the cyborg hit the plastic window with a thud. It quickly stood up, trembling, with his motor mechanism half ruined. Its arms didn’t answer and I walked slowly towards the thing. The doll looked in silence to a side but she realised this didn’t involve her.
I lifted the damn machine with my blades piercing under its rib cage, under the ‘Executioner’ logo, until they reached its internal organs. I twisted the blades and stared at its glowing eyes until the light extinguished. Then I threw it inside a trash container; it started the recycling process immediately. I looked to my right and the doll was still looking at me. She was still afraid, rumours pitted animal against machine without reason; it was just a way of uniting against a common enemy. I sheathed my blades and gave my hand to her. She hesitated but eventually reached for my paw. I walked her to the retro section, she would be safe here; I sincerely hoped that. Before leaving the city I gave a last look at this cold place. “Well, Teddy, one less on the list. But, many remain and I hope you have kept writing.”
