Introduction: Unyielding Fires
One thousand times fallen, one thousand and one reborn. Like a firebird, back and again returning to try once more. With valuable experience earned with each life she stood up and burnt bright again. She donned her armour, grabbed her weapon and charged. The creature, part reptile, part simple monstrosity, clawed forward. She knew that move, she dodged to the left. To the right it whipped with its tail, out of reach, she pressed forward. The other claw fell down and she stopped right before it. She got on top of it. The creature lifted her and she ran through the arm to its head: she needed to be close not to miss, again.
The arm kept going up, it would slam on the ground soon and she would fall. She slid through it and stopped with her feet on the shoulder. The scaly face turned and its feral eyes stared at her, she ignored them. While tempting as a target she had already found out, at a high cost, that her bolts weren’t enough to pierce through the transparent eyelid. She ran through the shoulder to the neck and hid to a side, away from mouth’s reach. She moved her arm over her chest, placed the crossbow inside the creature’s ear and the whole of the mountain shook. She fell to the ground and saw the flames around her: she was dead.
The flames burned the wounds away and she stood up. This time, at least, she was all geared up and ready to continue. The only problem was that she was right next to one of the creature’s feet and she didn’t like the idea of squashing, at all. She climbed the foot, with the bent knee as base she jumped to the hip and stabbed with her daggers. The blades pressed, the creature winced and the metal slid down on the skin along with her back towards the knee. The creature looked down and those inhuman eyes stared at her; their size undeterred by the distance. She had seen them several times before and never could prevent squinting at them.
Her fear became reality, the leg moved and she lost balance a large claw grabbed her and pressed from all directions. She was being crushed, she felt her ribs give way, one broke, then another. Her arms cracked but before she could despair the lack of air mercifully took consciousness away from her. It was only a moment, she was never sure how long it took for the flames to erupt again. Wild and untameable they reset the bones in place, mended the torn flesh, relit her spirit with their pure energy. She enjoyed the relief and with wide open eyes noticed that they had caught on the scales but with much less friendly intentions. She stood, healing before the behemoth as the flames lashed and spread. They bit and devoured until they consumed the whole of the creature in a pyre of epic proportions. The remaining ash was blown away, tenderly, by a delicate breeze. It reassured her of her own life with a fresh touch on her cheek as she took a deliciously deep breath.
