Introduction: Stolen Breath
“No, no, no! It has to be here somewhere. They couldn’t have taken it. They must’ve not taken it.” He searched pulling and pushing things aside. The study got its floor splattered with books, letters and scrolls. It was nowhere to be found. His empty eyes got shot in blood and stared with intensity at the open safe. It had betrayed him. He had trusted his most precious possession and it had lost it. It got open to the first person that got its filthy hands on it. He kicked the safe with his boot heel. The heavy metal box barely staggered on its legs after a sonorous bong.
“That happened three weeks ago. You see, I really need to retrieve the contents of that safe. I simply can’t live without it.” The scout looked at him with disdain. It was just another eccentric aristocrat wanting to get back some family heirloom or unspecified riches. Her time would be better spent doing all kinds of other things. However, the money was good and the job easy enough; she could track anything on this earth. Therefore: “Alright, give me the description and I’ll find the person. Nobody disappears without leaving a long, thick trace to follow.”
“It’s the best I can do for now.” “Thanks I know, I owe you a lot.” “It’s in my oath, I can’t let anyone die. Even you.” He looked at his hands with remorse. His skin was pale and dry, opening wounds when he clenched his fists; something that had gotten too difficult to prevent in the current situation. “Tomorrow, same time?” “Of course, same time.” The healer left with a trail of blinking dust after her. He inhaled the magical powder as much as he could. It wouldn’t be enough to make any difference but if there was any chance, he would take it.
“Here you are, Sir.” The scout handed the small, black, metal case to the aristocrat. He took it with trembling hands and opened it: the ring with the ‘V’ signet was there. He saw it with desire, he felt its warmth and caressed its polished surface. He delighted in its presence. “Thank you, thank you so much. You don’t know what a great service you’ve done to me. We agreed this much, right? Take double for bringing it so quickly and directly to me. Thanks, and thank you a lot. I’ll always be indebted to you.” She almost took a step back at the effervescent gratitude but composed herself. It must be a very dear memento. She took the bag of gold. “Thank you, Sir. If you need me again you know where to find me.”
She left but instead of leaving her gut told her to keep her eyes open. She climbed a tree, one of many surrounding the forest mansion, and got a good view of the room the aristocrat was in. “Bring the healer, immediately!” The voice roared and echoed through the rooms with bestial voracity. The healer arrived in minutes, she was evidently agitated and needed a few moments to catch her breath again. All the time the aristocrat caressed the ring with eyes wildly fixed on it; basking in its reflections. Her staff waved around him and the man wore his ring on the left hand.
The middle finger glowed, then the hand, then the glow extended to the arm, body and the other limbs. His skin gained a healthy, pale rosy tone, his eyes welcomed dark irises and his breathing could be heard, panting. “So you got your soul back, uh?” Still, it was a generous reward for her work. He obviously knew that she could easily discover his secret; if he didn’t suppose she knew already. “Let’s see what you do with your new life now, soul stealer.”
