Introduction: Surprise Cake
“All units ready? On my signal, approach with care.” The Special Forces initiated their advance. Careful and silent steps joined interrupted breaths and preceded bleak expectations. “Unit G on the door to the house, entering.” The man slided through door and on floor into the dining room. He reached a corridor and saw a woman slowly making her way outside. She pointed with a staff-shaped banana to the right. Obviously, their arrival had the party interrupted most impolitely. She followed his path outside while he slithered forward.
Reaching the end of the corridor, he poked the door open, just a bit, with the muzzle of his pistol. The lights were intense but there was no sound. A camera lay on the floor and to its left a table still held some cake portions and plastic glasses with sparkling fizzy drinks. He pushed the door open a bit more and he caught sight of a bit of the suspect. He retreated a few steps: “Suspect in sight, living room at the end of the corridor, support needed.” He peeked against the frame, the suspect hadn’t noticed but that could change any minute.
A woman dressed like a pharaoh appeared from another room and saw him. She stared in glinting gold wielding a spear. They exchanged a glance. Was she aware of the situation? Would she take him as another party guest? He signalled her to get out and she did understand; the uniform must’ve seemed credible enough or the drawn gun did the job. Either way, she cleared the corridor with feline grace. There was a rustling sound near the entry window and after a few moments four armed units joined him. One, two three, they stormed the room with their laser sights firmly on the target.
The suspect slowly turned and looked at them with a fixed smile. His fuzzy costume with large eyes and ears was a good touch. The briefing had included a detailed account of the criminal’s sadism but, fortunately, they’d arrived on time. The room was empty and the poisoned cake had been served but not eaten yet. In the blink of an eye, the suspect disappeared in plain sight. Darts flew and a uniform was down. The poison would act quickly so one unit took him out while Unit G and F provided cover fire. The house was searched inside and out but the suspect had vanished in thin air. A quick antidote was administered and evidence was collected. The poisoner was, again, at large but at least this time he had failed.
