Introduction: Void Dreams
It was a quiet evening at the temple. The monk did a final round before retiring. He checked the young apprentice, eager to learn but reckless in his search of knowledge. This time it seemed like the strange dreams, visions of horror from another realm that often plagued his mind, didn’t assail him this time. There was also a special guest: a Justicar. She was still practicing her arcane skills but he recognised the final steps of a training session; it was time to sleep. That’s exactly where his destination led him. Arriving at his room he prepared for a deserved slumber. He had barely placed his hat on the back of a chair when he heard the rabid screams.
Both Justicar and monk rushed to the source of the rending wails. He kicked the door open and she got in first, with glowing spheres ready to light and blast. The apprentice’s face was disfigured with terror, his features contorted in an expression that melted his face. They followed his stare and found the source of his anguish: a Reaper. The figure, translucent and ethereal faintly glowed before a wall. A sphere moved closer and part of it dissolved in thin air, as if sinking into another world. The scythe didn’t wait to respond to the unintended threat and cut the sphere in two. It silently reassembled but the meeting had taken a discernible turn.
In the rush to arrive to the screams the monk had left his spear in his room. Without hesitation he grabbed a tall lamp and pointed its light at the Reaper. The spheres of light danced around the creature under the weaving motions of the Justicar’s will. They exploded, dashed and burst with the energy of her concentration and control. The monk jumped at the Reaper and hit him with the light at the lamp’s tip. The scythe managed to deflect many attacks but not all and was always unable to break the monk’s defense or breach the distance to the Justicar.
The light finally burned the spectre away leaving only a black burn on the floor and wall against which it had been pressed. The Justicar returned her spheres to a relaxed stance which was exactly the same the monk did. He soon realised he should return the lamp instead of holding onto it as a weapon; it has been unexpectedly useful though. The apprentice had fainted in his bed. His face was still scarred by the horror but relaxation settled in. He would rest for a while, at least until further nightmares crept into his dreams. They all would’ve hoped that such nightmares would’ve stayed in the oneiric fields to where minds transcended.
