“What’s happening in the sky?” She looked up and removed her visor after a few seconds. The stars were being sucked into a whirlwind and disappearing. She looked before her: the mass of dark liquid that she had been chasing had turned into a human shape and was staring at the sky. It turned to look at her and with a trembling voice said: “I don’t like how this looks, lady.” They looked for a while longer but it was evident that things weren’t going to get better by themselves. Every second, the universe got darker.
She pressed a button on her glove and a screen came up. She checked the video and audio channels of the city but couldn’t find more than basic coverage. She noticed a mass near her. The creature was beside her, shivering. “I think the Lab could have more information. They have many computers.” She wasn’t one to stay idle. “Which lab?” “The Lab, I live there. I’ll show you.” It took them a few minutes go get to it. The security was unnerving but they got entrance.
In the main room there was a team of people in white, lab coats hurriedly checking screens and relying information through microphones. One passed nearby with a worrying expression and, noticing the new company, exclaimed: “Glad that you are here. We sent her to take you back because we need your help. We need all the help we can get. Can you use a computer, Miss? If so, take a seat and you’ll find all the information in the screen.” They sat down to read a report which started with: “A black hole is in the vicinity of the Milky Way and approaching. It’s swallowing everything in its path. We need to calculate how long it’ll take to reach the Solar System. Then, how to stop it.”
There was no need for further ado, they started working through spreadsheets of data, making and transmitting calculations. After some twenty minutes they had an answer: forty-three minutes before the black hole would eat the Earth. There was an unnatural silence in the whole facility. People were static, not even raising their eyes. She was the first to stand up: “Come on, work isn’t done. We know when, now, how do we stop it?” “You can’t stop that!” said a trembling voice to her side. She frowned and looked at the screen showing a close-up of the black hole. In an instant it was no longer there. “Did you see that?” All analysis pointed that the black hole had simply vanished. “How is that possible?” “It seems we have more work to do. Would you like a drink? It may take all night.” “Yes, I think I’ll have to get comfortable in the chair for a while.”
