Introduction: Adaptation
The silver blade glinted under the neon lights of the streets. She walked, blades in hand, towards the mockery of life that was the cyborg before her. The man-machine rattled and shook, depending on whether his parts were artificial or not. There wasn’t much human left in him but enough to make him feel the pain of the transformation. She looked at his eyes and saw nothing. Perhaps deep down inside a part of the human remained but it was too little and too weak. She was facing a machine and it had to be stopped.
She leapt and threw the kunai at the cyborg. Some were deflected by the thick armour, others lodged themselves in articulation and a few were responsible for the piercing pain in his skin. His face showed rage but his body was in full control under the protocols that run through his brain. He adapted his next attack to the possibility of a ranged counterattack but she knew when to change tactics. The smoke covered the area and she was invisible. A red glow indicated the infrared eye scanning for her but she was no longer nearby.
The explosion blew the cyborg in synthetic and a few organic parts. She stood on a nearby rooftop, looking down on the destruction. It wasn’t an elegant solution but it was effective and, worse still, necessary. She had had to adapt to new foes and that deemed necessary more firepower. The job was done, at any rate, and that was enough for her. She left, walking slowly and left a sight as she looked down on the busy, neon-lit streets below. The world had changed and she had to change with it. It wasn’t something she liked but something necessary: adapt or perish.
