Introduction: High Score War

She approached the cabinet and waited to the see the high score table. It showed all her records, each one better than the last as she progressively got better. However, at the top, she noticed a different name. It was a sole entry without her name. Someone, somehow, had managed to beat all of her scores in one single try. She stared at the screen until the table appeared again and re-read the name. She couldn’t recognise it but she knew very well what it meant: it meant war.

She spent the week going to the arcade to beat that score. Sometimes she got near, sometimes she only beat one of her old scores. It was a difficult game after all and the dragons were always the most difficult. She didn’t give up, she was going to keep practicing and erase that name from the table. On Saturday’s morning she stood before the cabinet and stretched: she was ready to play until she conquered everything. When the table appeared, she noticed something was not right.

At the top, again, there was yet another name over the one she was trying to beat. She couldn’t believe it. Somebody else had managed to outdo both her and that mysterious player. She started asking around to know if anyone recognised those names but nobody knew. As a last resort, she asked the guy in charge, who was always around. He looked at the screen with a puzzled expression. “That’s funny, you are the only one that plays this old game. Perhaps it’s a glitch. I’ll put it down to service.”

She didn’t know what to think but with the machine being repaired her weekend ended up containing way more studying than she expected. It was a good thing, though: it would give her some extra time during the week to return to the arcade. On Monday, after class, she was right there in front of the cabinet. The table had been reset with only the good old ‘AAA’ name with all the scores. She inserted a coin, grabbed the joystick and laid her fingers on the buttons. It was time to set her name on digital stone again.
