Introduction: Two Rabbits and a Fish
The rabbit hopped to the side of the pond and looked in. The water was crystal clear and there was another rabbit there. How strange, he hadn’t smelled or heard anyone. It was always good to meet another rabbit, though. It had happened before but it was something not as usual as he would’ve liked. After all, the woods weren’t really the best place for it. Sadly, that was where he was and so he had adapted. He kept looking at the pond and noticed that a fish of a bright red and pure white was looking at him.
“What are you looking at rabbit?” said the fish. “A rabbit like me. It’s here in the water.” The fish swam near the border and looked around. “I only see you. There are no other rabbits here.” “In the water, come here and see!” “I can’t leave the water, rabbit, but if you signal where I can try to see from below.” The rabbit pointed with his left paw in front of him and the fish swam from left to right just under the rabbit in the water.” “Wait, you went right through the rabbit!” “Really? When, where?” “Here.” The rabbit signalled again with the same paw.
The fish passed another time but saw no one. “It’s odd, you say that there’s a rabbit in the water but I can’t see any.” “That’s not the only strange thing. Come near.” The fish swam to the border and heard the rabbit whisper: “I think he’s imitating me.” “Why do you say that?” “He always lifts his paw when I signal him.” “Couldn’t he be greeting you?” “That’s not how rabbits greet each other, fish, there’s something strange about him.” “There sure is, you see the rabbit but I can’t see him. How does he look? It might help if you tell me.”
“Good idea, it’s a white rabbit, all white, with long ears and a big smile.” The rabbit got closer to the water for a better look. “Now he’s not smiling and he’s looking at me with a strange expression.” “You have a strange expression.” “Do I?” “Yes, and you are white with long ears.” “He could be a relative!” “Hello, rabbit, do we know each other? Are we related?” The rabbit flapped his ears and the other rabbit immediately responded with the same action.” “It looks like we are. He’s returning my family greeting.” The fish looked at the rabbit speaking with the invisible rabbit with her mouth wide open.
“Do you live far? Are there more rabbits where you live? I live in the woods and it gets lonely without company.” The other rabbit didn’t answer. “Strange, no answer.” “Perhaps he’s shy.” interjected the fish. “You’re right! That must be it.” “I have an idea.” said the fish. “Why don’t you come visit the rabbit often so that you can become friends? He may open up to you that way. Besides, if he’s not around you can always come talk and swim with me. It looks like you rabbits like water a lot!” “Yes, I didn’t know that about rabbits myself.”
