In flames, blue and cold, the forest burns. It’s not exactly true, everything collapses, broken as playful swirls of frozen air fly upwards. It’s certainly an unusual view. Villagers had heard of the scaly, dark dragons with bad temper and breath. This dragon isn’t like that. Trees fall one at a time, there’s no anger, no rush, it seems like the beast has a plan. In fact, considering its elegance and soft movements few would call it that. People gathered in nearby hills to look at the dragon at work. Some gathered as in a picnic, others merely passed by and stayed looking in awe at the white creature.
The night came and its biting chill prompted the onlookers to leave for the cosy embrace of their homes. The dragon had stopped felling trees a good while ago. With enough room around it started to pluck trees, the largest and thickest, organizing them in piles. Then started the architectural work: the creature used a claw to draw a diagram on the floor. Afterwards, trees were placed, stabbing the ground like pikes, firm and immovable. After a while, the shape of a toothpick house started to take shape.
The following day, with the first warming rays of Sun, children rushed, often without parents able to follow fast enough, to see what the dragon had done. Climbing up the hills, they saw a gigantic house of wood in the clearing made on the forest. They looked for a while but nothing seemed to happen. As more people arrived, the Sun grew stronger and the temperature rose. A set of logs moved imitating a door and the dragon exited its home. People cheered and clapped as if spectating a play. The dragon, for the first time, looked at the people with its light blue eyes. Some were caught off ward, others were frozen in fear but children didn’t stop celebrating.
That’s when the dragon stood tall and dignified, put an arm before and another after its body and bowed with the class of an aristocrat. Immediately afterwards, it leapt into the clouds and flew with glowing, white wings against the clear Sun. Children were delighted and even more so when the dragon flew over the village on the evening on his way back to his home. They realised they had a new and most unusual neighbour in a boring place where nothing was supposed to ever happen.
