Introduction: A Dance of Lights
Dark sky over a deep sea: an interesting view. “Difficult to tell them apart, don’t you think boy?” The lad shrugged in his new suit. His mind was on the evening ball and he didn’t care about anything else. “In my time I had a few adventures. I can’t tell you about them, it’s all secret stuff; you understand. I’ll tell you one thing though: I’ve seen sky and sea fuse into one once. It wasn’t pretty and it’s something you won’t like to remember.” The words almost bounced against deaf ears. Now it was time for the old sea dog to shrug and walk away. The boy would probably be alright, he was too green to know of any evil. He, on the other hand, could use some help if what he suspected was going to happen.
“Nothing better than being prepared for something so that it won’t happen.” Preparation was essential but luck always had a cynical take on the matter. He wore his uniform, firmly placed his cutlass at his waist, grabbed his tricorne and exited the cabin. The boy was in the same place, staring at the horizon with a mind probably as dreamy as his eyes. “Captain! The lightning. Look!” When the boy turned his face was distorted by a vision he couldn’t put into words: he simply pointed with a trembling arm. His eyes weren’t what they used to be but he always had his trusty spyglass in a pocket. “Walking thunder… it’s been a while.”
Beings of pure electricity were dancing with inhuman twists of their bodies in a macabre mockery of a ball. “Guess the entertainment will have to wait a bit, lad.” The boy’s eyes were fixated on the creatures and his hands grabbed the side of the deck to the point that his skin was red with blood. The Captain moved in wide strides towards the helm and took it. “All men on deck!” His voice roared like an animal before a fight.
The strident howl that came afterwards shook the boy from his firm grasp of the ship. The storm had acknowledged the accepted challenge. He looked at the Captain. “Look, Jim lad, take all our guests below deck and keep them safe. Make sure no one does anything stupid. I’ve been through once this and with luck it’ll all be over soon.” The boy nodded and rushed below. The Captain brandished a large smile as the storm started to assail the ship. “Ahoy again. Let’s see what you have for me this time, old friend.”
