Introduction: A Look of Order

“Not another one.” The Officer took cover and let the drone pass. It scanned the area with its lights and continued with its usual patrol route. She got out into the sidewalk and looked around: coast clear. She hastened, with dissimulated calm, swiftly taking seemingly unnecessary turns until she arrived at the park. She looked through the trees, the few remaining in the city, towards the tall skyscraper, base of the Order of the Lotus. She hid behind a tree and looked. It didn’t take long for her to come out of the building. She got on with the chase.

She walked carelessly while the Officer took great pains to keep a healthy distance and conceal her intentions; it all seemed pointless, she was oblivious to her surroundings. Regardless, she wasn’t going to take any risks. Not this time. She got into a tall, thin building covered in green-shaded windows. She couldn’t follow but she wasn’t done yet. With her binoculars she could follow the specific shape of her target: floor 24. She didn’t know the door number but it was the fifth to the left of the second to rightmost elevator. She got what she wanted.

She returned to the station and inputted her findings in the terminal. She got the specifics she was lacking: door 248. It was an apartment paid by the Order of the Lotus, obviously. Her partner looked over her shoulder with a bittersweet smile. “So, you finally tracked her down?” “Yes, I got all I needed.” “Will you go and talk to her then?” “Should I? Can I, anyone, really take her out of that cult?” “It wasn’t always like that. There must be some good in that. There has to be some hope left.” “Maybe, but for the time being it’s better to know where she is. When we are ready, when we can really get her out, we’ll strike.”

Barely had her words escaped her lips when she realised she was talking for more than one person. “I mean, you don’t…” “Of course I’ll help. Don’t worry, I’m getting ready too. When the time comes I’ll have something for them too.” “It can come out horribly wrong. We could end up without a job or worse.” “No one can blame what they can’t see.” “You can be sinister when you want, you know?” “Well, they’ve worked hard to reveal this facet of mine. Hope they enjoy it.” “They will have to, it’ll be nicer than what I have in mind for them.” “Okay, enough talk. Let’s call it a night and go home. We should do all we can while there’s time.” “Yes, with this people you never know but this time we’ll make them guess for once.”
