Introduction: A Sea Touching the Sky
“All hands on deck! Everybody grab a rope and get to work. Pull the sails!” The crew desperately folded the sails but the mainsail was torn to pieces by the immense waves that threatened to capsize the ship with every push. The Captain organized the crew, each in their position and with a specific function, and inspected the situation. They were brave but they were also frightened; only a lunatic wouldn’t be. They have had to face all kinds of enemies but the sea would always be their best friend and most formidable foe.
As the ship went adrift among mountains of water the Captain recalled the good weather they set sail to. Now, he looked at the sky and saw heavy clouds but there was no rain. Actually, the wind wasn’t that strong either. There was a storm brewing, no doubt, but it was the sea itself that was mad with ire. The waters shook the ship so much that even his thoughts jumped between the beginning of the journey and the dire present. He tried to concentrate, “The storm isn’t here yet, what is causing this?”
They felt an underwater explosion to a side and he looked to starboard. Water was propelled in columns high up into the sky. The crew stared in unison at the water as it splashed back around the centre of each pillar. It gave the sensation that the water was alive, creating a sort of natural fountain to decorate the even oceans. Then it retreated and reached up again. It was all a fancy of the mind, obviously. The Captain knew very well that if something was going on there then they were far too close to it. He ordered the pilot: “Do whatever you can but get us away from those columns!” The pilot did what he could but it seemed that when one wave pulled them away two got them closer.
With some luck, a fair deal of faith and even some curses the ship managed to steer clear from the pillars of waters. The Captain checked the mainsail but it was ruined. He ordered to replace it with the headsail. He consulted with the navigator and plotted a course for the nearest port. The pilot steered the ship to port and the crew looked behind at the pillars of water, still flying unnaturally, as if trying to touch the sky. Even after they had vanished from plain sight the Captain checked with his telescope at the indefatigable efforts of the sea. “Would you reach the sky? I don’t know but we aren’t going to stay to see you. You’re too frantic a lady for us to survive anywhere near.”
