Introduction: Machine Under the Moon
The ancient tree spoke: “The machines are everywhere. They aim to rule but it’s only possible if we do let them.” His painted face was solemn; an expression that the ever-present saplings were utterly unable to imitate or comprehend. She kneeled in front of her Moon and looked up. Her light reached and her eyes glowed with inhuman energy. “Your sister shall be saved. I will see to it.” She rose and followed the tree into the city. The buildings bent and crumbled into the streets. They sprinkled rubble and dust fell like a fine rain. They walked with care, making their way towards the park in the central area.
“What’s that woman doing? That lunatic is going to get herself killed.” The resistance fighters were hiding behind a portion of wall that hinged with a precarious balance. The Battlecast drone was nearby with lights scanning every building; they were prey and soon would become catch. With incredulous eyes they watched the woman kneel before the Moon and glow under it. A squadron of small vegetal beings surrounded her and stood guard, looking around. The drone detected their presence immediately once a few of the little creatures got within radar range. The fighters hugged their rifles and looked at each other.
The drone advanced quietly above the streets. “All humans are to be detained and converted. Lay down your weapons and follow this unit. You have five seconds to comply. Resistance will be met with…” The saplings rushed towards the machine, leapt with a big smile in their tiny faces and exploded savagely against the metal plates; they were strong but started to rattle under the pressure. The Dark Valkyrie stood up and with an inexpressive visage sent an arc of dim moonlight towards the machine. The Battlecast unit answered with its own arc of energy and several missiles but she was no longer where they were aimed. The synthetic visor registered the human right in front of it, evasive action was discarded, it concentrated all its power in one single beam.
The Dark Valkyrie surrounded herself with a shield of light, stabbed the ground before her and sent the drone flying upwards. When it landed it had almost been disassembled by the multiple slashes of her crescent blade. She stood in front of the machine and took the central processing unit from the wreckage, pulling until the few cables still attached gave way. The witnesses from the resistance stared with eyes wide open. A tree emerged from the shadows and stood by the woman’s side. “This will give us much necessary information; here.” The tree swallowed the chip. “We shall take it to the resistance as soon as possible. They will find much use in it. Let’s go, we only need this one.” They advanced towards the resistance fighters and went past them, towards their base. A few felt unease and the woman turned to look them straight in the eyes: “Come on, they are probably waiting for you. There’s much to do, don’t linger on.” The fighters followed with only a few whispers and muted comments between them. They had found questions they never thought they’d ask and yet they came with help they very much needed. Tonight they could rest better than usual with the full Moon watching over them.
