Introduction: Blood Blades
The Moon, round and brilliant dominates the night sky. Her rays reach deep between branches and leaves reflecting on the keen edges of engraved kamas and lightning-infused claws. Kamas clash with shurikens and blades meet others like them. Always deflecting attacks yet also absorbing the electrick shock the dance slowly weakens the kunoichi. She dashes and lands a flying kick on the lightning ninja only to see the image dissolve in thin air: “Only a trick, just a shadow. He’s behind!” The claws thrust forward.
They reach far into smoke. Shurikens join them but are unable to find the kunoichi. “I was led right into this. Quick, get back!” The counterattack breaks the trend and the ninja is sent reeling back until a tree stops his forced backward steps. The tree scolds the ninja. Then, whole trees shake branches wanting to get the unwelcome guests away. They dash through the canopy with bright flashes of moonlight showing the deadly slashes. Panting they stare fixedly at each other. “Our squabble can’t be decided by mere mastery of ninjutsu.” “Squabble? You will know balance, murderer.” “Assumptions cast shadows and I know how to move between them.” “Your end is tonight.”
The blades didn’t move anymore, the combatants weren’t unable to resume their battle. The night turned crimson, the Moon dripped blood and the air was so thick it could be cut. It was too difficult to breathe. Back on the ground they stumbled out of the forest only to find the town tinted with the supernatural colour. Their masks were of little use to filter the air and both felt the menacing presences that announced themselves between shadows. They cast their best tricks: smoke bombs precariously covered the kunoichi and an army of shadows gave their master options that didn’t feel sufficient.
Dazed and exhausted half by their tricks and half by the suffocating Blood Moon they exited the town to find all paths tinted in the same hue. They sighed, and straightened against the heavy air. Weapon ready they stood, back to back as the fog dripped around them. Blood erupted and cut like blades but their own were as keen as their reflexes. Shadows, smoke, lightning, slashes, shurikens, kamas were used in combinations they hadn’t anticipated and when their lungs couldn’t fill themselves with enough air came a sunray. The Blood Moon was over and they had survived, this time. Both knew that they wouldn’t be able to fight like that again the next night. They needed to rest, meditate, research and return again but to face a new enemy.
