Introduction: Around, In Us All
“Do you feel the Void? Reaching further, deeper, spreading, changing, transforming your body, mind and your soul. Do you feel it? Embrace it and raise Harbinger.” What once was a man rebelling against the unrelenting, otherworldly corruption has become a husk devoid of will. It only awaits a direction to further spread the disease and help the contagion advance. Without a word the realm orders and the slave obeys. Bending to an existence more twisted than his worst nightmares his mind is shattered and his body moves of its own volition. Like a slab of dead meat reacting to stimuli, the herald of the Void descends on clean grasslands and turns vibrant life into hollow death.
Vegetation and animals twist and break becoming mockeries of their former selves. The herald walks onward, the corruption creeps like fire but dissolves like acid. The nightmares left behind him gather as a lifeless army. He sees what he does without care, he consumes without regret; he has lost everything to the Void. In the distance a town, the inhabitants stare in disbelief. They call others to look at what they are unable to understand. They will eventually know the meaning but it’ll be too late; it always is. A hero is required, none is to be found, whatever existed similar to heroism is now part of the Void.
Citizens run in panic, the Void lashes out and the town becomes a nightmare beyond comprehension. Whoever isn’t consumed raves madly about torturing visions; in their minds and before they very eyes. “Daughter.” The Harbinger’s mind is far gone but not enough that it’s unable to react to the sight of suffering. Numb and feverishly the nightmare in his mind is recreated in flesh and blood but with one single exception. “I will save you, I have not forgotten.” The Nether Blade changes colour and the slashes cut left and right. The corruption retreats from his body but he still burns with a supernatural energy. He turns on the Void and an empty army stands before him.
He changes dimensions, in and out, he slashes his way between Void husks. In his mind the image of his daughter becomes precise and vivid it energises him with purpose and fills his heart with emotion. The ethereal blade shoots a sphere into the maw of a melting, unrecognizable wild cat. Several people, some he personally changed, charge at him and he spreads a mantle of energy to break them in two. His sins stare back at him but his courage rages even stronger inside him: his mind is focused on a single image, his path is clear. He carves one through the corruption and then another until he cleans the land of the Void and the rift finally closes. “I will save you. I will save those I changed too from the grasp of the Void and then… I will be the invasion.” His lungs struggle for air, his body is too different to survive in the now alien earth. His redemption will wait a little, only a little. The Void will learn to fear him. He sure has become the harbinger of the end: the end of the Void.
