Introduction:
He sat at the park bench and looked at the boys playing football. The match wasn’t exciting, one team was on the advantage and the last minutes were simply the chronicle of a death foretold. He waited for the players to gather their belongings. One came near, his bag laid underneath the bench he was sitting on. “Excuse me”, the man grabbed the bag and placed it on the bench. “Nice day for a match.” “How did it end?” “We lost, but it’s alright. There’s always tomorrow.” The player lifted the bag and left. The man grabbed the envelope left on the bench and slid it into his jacket. He sprung up and left.
He didn’t look inside. He knew well enough what it should contain. The envelope had the blueprints for a couple of prototype weapons that had been borrowed from a research installation. One was an improved vulcan cannon and the other an inferno missile, heat-seeking. He sped up his pace. Took two random corners and then repeated the process in inverse order. He was being followed and he couldn’t get them off his trail. There were enough people that it was unnecessary to run, not yet. They wouldn’t risk action with so many witnesses.
He entered a bar and they soon went in after him. They looked around and couldn’t find him. The barman stared back at them and he didn’t look friendly with his stained shirt. Patrons started to echo his behaviour, they started to feel the pressure. Their eyes shifted from side to side and all the while other eyes reflected their images, static and intense. It didn’t take more than a few seconds before they scampered outside. The barman smiled and said “this one’s on me.” He got his jacket from under the bar and exited through the backdoor.
