Introduction: Taking Some Air
So far and so near. He floated in a void with the most impressive scenery around. He reached the surface of the station and anchored himself. The damage had been minimal but the odd, tiny meteorite was enough to break the most sensitive equipment. You just couldn’t be prepared for everything, even less in space where so little could be predicted and was actually known. The fix was easy enough: just replace the antenna and take the damaged one back. It could be a whim but he had the time to repair it and it was never a bad idea to have spare parts. With the exchange done he released the anchor and hopped away into the emptiness.
His calculation had been a little off. He passed right by the door, only scratching the handles with the thick gloves. You only needed a distraction like this to be doomed. It wasn’t the first time he had missed his target in a jump but it was never something one was prepared to face. He sighed and regained his calm. He attached the rope to the anchor and threw it towards the handle; it got hooked without issue. He pulled, more annoyed than worried, and reached the door. Things like this shouldn’t happen but they did. Fortunately, his training didn’t fail him and so he could use the tools he had to the best of his ability.
Once inside he took off the suit and proceeded towards the communication’s console. He tried again, it still wasn’t relaying well. He just hoped he wouldn’t need to go out again and fix something else or worse: the same thing. He was losing his patience until the machine finally seemed to get back to its senses and tuned into the desired signal. About time, here the luxury of failure seldom left a second chance. He finally set up the channel and sent the message: “Everything okay here. Sorry for the delay, had to go out to get a breath of fresh air; just a brief change of scenery.”
