Introduction: Thrill of the Hunt
“There’s someone who can help.” He didn’t often get requests. After all, he didn’t advertise his services or even offer them to the general public. He preferred to find his own work and it wasn’t difficult these days. Regardless, there was always somebody who knew someone and, from time to time, a plea for help reached him. He wasn’t one to ignore them but he would never acknowledge them; lest more pour afterwards. He had enough as it was. This time it was a situation that he simply couldn’t ignore. Even if he hadn’t been asked it didn’t take long to hear about what was going on. It surely sounded like the kind of job he liked. Being a Night Hunter had its share of thrills but the hunt was always his true call.
The specifics were hazy: somehow a skeleton in the dinosaur exhibition had walked off, like that. An investigation would come, but later. Now was the time to hunt. He sniffed the area and found a strange fresh smell. Usually bones had a certain musty feel that spoke more about their storage than their history. This time it was the complete opposite. He kept on, following his nose, until he heard the sounds; screams actually. The stomps were heavy but it was the panic that pointed him with the utmost urgency. When he reached the garden the scene had many recognizable elements but the dinosaur was the most prominent. It seemed to turn its head with a smirk, parts of the skeleton visible surrounded by slowly growing skin. Something was very wrong with that creature.
The dinosaur must’ve sensed the danger because it directly lounged with its maw wide open towards the Night Hunter. He leapt to a side and, aided by the vegetation’s cover, sent out his boleadoras on the instant the huge mouth shut. Without giving the beast time to think he jumped on its back and stabbed it down with animal fury. It didn’t work well: the undead aren’t easy to put down. Besides, even though there are certain mechanical restrictions once specific tendons and muscles are cut we were talking about a walking skeleton to start with. In the end, he had to resort to pure brute force: cutting and crushing until it simply didn’t have with what to move. He wasn’t exactly proud of his work; in fact he was somewhat dissatisfied with what he had to stoop down to. At least, it had worked so it was time to retire into the shadows again. A good thing about all the mystery was that the cowl would keep him anonymous enough. That would come quite in handy to prevent his fellow colleagues from recognizing such a subpar job.
