Introduction: Fireworks Duel

“Fireworks! Look!” The children looked up to the spectacle of colour and light. New shapes appeared after each explosion: dragon, yeti, panda, bow and arrow and even more. They collapsed in a soft fading which gave birth to the next figure and then, another one. They ran through the streets to the centre of town where the celebration was taking place. They approached, between crowds, to the centre where they could see the fireworks being shot. It wasn’t what they expected.

A little girl was igniting the many rockets that her grinning, huge panda carried on her back. All of a sudden, a young girl appeared riding a rocket with the shape of a dragon. It left a multicolour trail and she was shooting more fireworks with the cannon she carried on her shoulder. The panda grabbed another pack of rockets and the little girl redoubled her efforts. It seemed a competition of sorts, to see which one made the biggest display and no one could declare a clear winner.

With such intensity it didn’t take long for them to run out of fireworks. Standing in front of each other both girls stuck out their tongues and made faces. Then they laughed, hugged and left together with the huge panda behind; carrying all they had conveniently forgotten behind. The show over now, the children ran back home before anyone was none the wiser about their absence. They didn’t recognise the girls but they hoped this wasn’t the last time they saw them and their magnificent show. From the talk of people about town, it surely was the case.
