Introduction: Breaking the Dam
“In time, you will all meet the blades.” “root:\RESET.exe -force” The cyborg saw the command but couldn’t react in time. Her mind shut down for a second then started to initialise her systems, checking consistency and readying for action. It took seconds before her eyes and it was enough to make her feel something she hadn’t in ages: fear. She didn’t know why it was happening, she couldn’t even recall the first time she would’ve, logically, been rebooted. Her eyes cleared and what she saw just didn’t make sense: a mermaid and a bunny. Was her memory corrupt?
She looked at them perplexed and that must’ve shown, somehow, in her synthetic features. The mermaid smiled and moved closer to her, with a body of water underneath, which worried the cyborg a little. Her touch was fresh and, strangely, the contact with an organic body didn’t bother her as it usually did. The bunny stated to jump in place and laughed. “What is happening to me?” “Don’t worry, it’ll all be over in a minute. We will make you free and you will be able to decide what you want to do for once in your life.”
Her eyes blinked and after an image blurred and mixing colours at random she returned to the street where she was. The neon lights were there, the tall buildings, the glass, the steel, the wet pavement and her blades, deep into it. She picked them up and looked around. It took her a moment to realise her objective was in front of her but, something wasn’t right. She was no longer her target, why should she be? What reason did she have to hunt them? It was them. She’d been chasing after them for a while now, she just received the command and acted; she didn’t question.
“Welcome back, come with us, there’s much we have to talk about.” “Always the same with you. How are you feeling? Do you feel alright? Hope the process wasn’t painful.” “She’s alright, she’s a tough girl. Besides, we should get moving. They’ll send drones now.” She followed the three figures, half dazzled, half confused but wholly conscious that she wanted to do it. Wanted? That was the word: she had just taken a decision. How long had it been? What had really happened? Well, answers seemed to be in front of her so why not follow the rabbit hole and see how deep it went?
