Introduction: Watching in Disappointment
“A dragon Captain?” “Oh, yes. We really need one.” The ship dropped anchor near an island wild and lush in vegetation and specimens. The thick foliage didn’t betray the island’s inhabitants but it surely was unable to contain the primal sounds that emanated beyond the mantle of leaves. A boat left the ship with Captain and band of merry, tough-looking sailors. Perhaps they weren’t the most rugged and experienced ones but they certainly had seen their fair share of battle. At least, that’s how it seemed to me as I watched them row to the shore.
Once they reached the beach they simply walked forward without much guidance, except for the leadership of their Captain. She was determinate but it was obvious she had no idea where she was going. Once they took a few steps into the jungle I think they started to grasp the idea. “Quiet, stay together. There’s something around here.” There surely was and it wasn’t just me. They felt the ground shaking and instinctively started to back down. The Captain had more brawns than brains because she kept going forward. I had to intervene: “Run! It’s coming. You don’t have much time!”
That wasn’t a good idea. Even though I was wearing one of my best hats and bowties they just couldn’t believe their eyes. Fine, as a creature from beyond space and time I have watched several reactions to my presence, this was of the disappointing kind. They kept staring while I felt the peculiar gait of the beast. “Run! Before the flames get to you!” They had to finally see the dragon to start moving. Of course, it was too late. Only the Captain, with a fleetness of feet I had rarely seen, and other equally fast sailors managed to reach the boat and return to the ship. Now I wonder, what wonderful tales they could’ve told me if they had just taken the right path.
