Introduction: Armour and Hood
“Dark night don’t you think?” “It’ll be darker soon.” “Grim as always but remember that we aren’t in this for the hunt.” “Don’t remind of what makes me want to kill.” She said nothing else, her hooded companion was a bit edgy and she was as well. It wasn’t usual to be invited to a party by one of the greatest gladiators of the arena. Neither of them were notorious for their achievements; which they preferred to keep discretely to themselves. So, why had the invitation come? Why the two of them together? Why so late at night?
When they arrived at the mansion they found the gates open and dim lights barely inviting them in as they flanked the path towards the front door. They advanced with senses tense and muscles twitching. At each side only grass and trees were visible in a moment and the other only darkness; as if the lights were playing with them. They looked at each other with the instinct of warriors. They haven’t fought together before but they didn’t need instructions to know what to do. The hooded figure dissolved in the shadows while the armoured one readied her hammer.
The attack didn’t take long to arrive but it was, let’s say, disappointing. The axe whistled through the air but the hammer made short work of it. “This can’t be all.” She readied her hammer immediately and she was right: more axes came which proved a bit more difficult to parry but more due to quantity than to quality. “No finesse.” Although, she had to admit that the flaming edges made for a good show against the dark night. When the Gladiator appeared with his big smile she only saw arrogance and the desire to charge. She knew better than that. She watched and waited, he charged.
Running and revving up axes he sent forward an onslaught of fire and blades that the hammer had trouble dealing with. She was tired and exasperated. However, she knew that in the shadows was her trump card. There was something in the darkness, prowling, sensing, expecting. The Gladiator was too centred on himself and his revolving axes to notice the blade, thin but glinting against the stars, insinuate under his throat. He didn’t know at any moment the danger he was until he felt the cold edge against the skin. She took pity on him and knocked him out before his hooded friend transformed his sinister smirk into a smile of joy. “Let’s get out of here. We can be sure he won’t tell.” “Spoilsport.” “It takes long to wash clothes anyway.” “I’ll just get another set, I have many, you know?” “I can imagine.”
