Introduction: Between Flames
“Don’t try, succeed.” The blade gleamed amidst the flames and its reflections played on the hunter’s bone armour. The beast leaped towards the elite soldier but her large sword parried dagger and short sword. “Don’t wait for them, make them wait for you.” She hopped forward, the hunter staggered back, she followed with two other hops slashing in each fall. The hunter was made to retreat behind the flames. He was now stalking behind the sea of flames. “Cornered prey become predator.” She dashed through the flames with sword before her and slashed widely in front of her; spreading flames as the hunter’s armour saved his life.
He stepped back and steadied himself with a hand on the ground. That gave him the perfect stance to leap forward again. She wasn’t far enough for the leap to reach a threatening height so she simply wacked the hunter down with the sword; the bone helmet saved his life this time. “It doesn’t matter who begins, you finish.” She held her sword with both hands and swiped the hunter who was sent flying backwards beyond the charred trees. She walked forward but didn’t see him anymore. Now the problem was the fire. A sword wasn’t going to be of much use.
“Not just a weapon, a tool.” She looked behind and saw her mentor right by the flames. “You were here all the time?” “Of course, petite soldier.” “You could’ve lent me a hand.” “The how would you learn if someone always does it for you?” “What are we going to do about the flames?” “Cut them in half.” It was figuratively speaking of course. What they ended up cutting was the bottom part of a hillside which provoked a little avalanche of soil which covered a rather larger area than any of them expected. It did do the job, though. “Now we need to explain this to the authorities.” “We are shadows of justices, we don’t explain anything. A handy perk in this case élite.”
