Introduction: The Human Factor

“Target identified. Approaching.” The cyborg advanced through streets packed with barely human shapes. Some hid behind armour and large clothes leaving only a colander plate before their glowing eyes. Others proudly displayed their serpentine bodies. There was much variety in shapes and forms with some almost fully embracing their animal nature. What the cyborg had found in synthetic implants they had found splicing DNA. There was always the question of which one was a healthier solution: being part of the machine or the pack? The martial artist relaxing in a small pool with a fresh drink would answer: “Perhaps neither.”

The cyborg approached him, his sensors didn’t detect any extraordinary characteristics. He looked like what the scan verified: a simple human without eyesight. However, he carried himself all too well and the way he carelessly handled his drink without dropping a single drop made him doubt. Deep inside, something told him that there was more to him than what was obvious to the eye; enhanced or not. It was not something computable, what little humanity remained in him screamed to take care. “Hello, I have come for you. Don’t resist.”

The martial artist moved his face towards him and lowered his sunglasses. His empty eyes over a wide smile: “Who might you be? Would you like a drink before we discuss this? I’m sure we can arrange it all without problems.” “Don’t resist, stand and follow.” The cyborg’s chest felt tight with a feeling all too human to be mistaken for a malfunction; though feeling would be considered exactly that. He drew his sword as per his protocol and assumed a fighting stance. Still sitting with drink firmly in hand the martial artist saw the blade descend in a vertical slash. He kicked the hilt up sending the cyborg staggering backwards. The cyborg dashed but he had stood up already and stepped to a side; then kicked his behind.

“Your efforts are amusing but pointless. You are human you can’t defeat me. I don’t want to hurt you but…” “Don’t worry, you won’t.” The cyborg slashed three times, the final time creating a whirlwind that created funny ripples on the pool. Each attack had only reached air. Reasoning that the martial artist needed motion, to sense a disturbance to notice him he stood still; he could hold on breathing for a good while. The martial artist slammed the floor and propelled forward with a flying kick that passed right by the cyborg’s side. Before the cyborg could move a monumental kick sent him flying out the backyard.

After bouncing against concrete the cyborg stood up with all kinds of scrapes and a dented shoulder plate. He looked back to the backyard and saw the martial artist again on the pool drinking. He stood up but only managed a partial rise, his legs didn’t answer. He hadn’t noticed how but both knee bending mechanisms were ruined. He staggered away from the neighbourhood and asked for reinforcements. They arrived and he was sent for repairs while search drones scoured the area. They only found eyes glowing back at them and the sound of scales against pavement. To them the martial artist had disappeared but everybody else still saw him in the pool with his immovable drink.
