Introduction: The Angel, the Guardian and the Mermaid
In blinding light the land was scorched, the skies opened and he came down. Some said he was an angel, others, not so prone to beliefs, speculated on him being from another world but either way he was not of this. Every time a beam would concentrate on a spot and leave him behind, glowing as if he were made of light too. Brave warriors that survived the horrible events that usually prompted his apparitions would tell of his noble selflessness but few knew exactly who, from where or why. One old swordsman once said that he fought with him, many years ago, and asked him: “So, who really are you?” “I am no one but am something. My value is not in what I mean but in what my actions represent.”
That time he saved the life of fourteen adventurers; sadly, as the man recalled, they lost six. It seemed that there were limits even to what and angel could do. There were other reports about him. A woman once spoke of the time that the angel carried the bloodied body of his husband to their cottage. She was desperate with worry but, despite the terrible injuries, he recovered. He stayed glowing by the side of the bed looking on him for the whole night without rest. Some say that his presence kept the husband alive or, at least, his light was a beacon of hope strong enough to make the future something to hold on to.
Nothing is concrete with legends but that’s something to be accepted. What few know is that sometimes legends meet. Surely many know about the rune-inscribed ruins in the forest outside of town and the zeal with which it is guarded. Others have probably seen the river mermaid or have heard tales about her. Interestingly, these three icons of our land seem to have met once. It’s said that a naive adventurer with desires of grandeur arrived at the ruins with polished sword glinting under the Sun. He cut the vegetation aside and entered only to find that the guardian of the old temple was well alive and ready to defend its secrets.
His sword was quickly broken, his armour plates battered and many of his bones broken. For some reason, perhaps he was nearby, the angel saw the fear in the young man’s face and taking pity in his plight decided to intervene. As the story goes, the light shone in the middle of the ruins but the guardian was none impressed with it. In fact, it seemed to glow as strongly as the beam with shared or absorbed magical power. The flowing sword of the angel chipped against rocks too hard and tendrils grabbed his body and threw him aside. He managed to pick up the young man and return him to home; some say a cottage where his wife was waiting for him.
The following day the angel returned to the ruins and faced the guardian again: “To harm without discretion is to be danger itself.” “All those that understood the threats within this temple are dead and so will you be if you dare uncover them.” responded the guardian with the usual warning. The angel charged with renewed strength and sword but the result didn’t change. With body entangled completely he was battered against rocks until his white armour or body was tainted by the colour of his own blood.
Standing up, he channelled all of his power into his sword and soaring through the air dived into the guardian. This time, he managed to cut its tail but, to his astonishment, the tendrils quietly regenerated themselves and the guardian was whole in scarce seconds; scarce enough that he didn’t have time to escape. Held before the guardian it’s said that a wave of unseen proportions washed clean the ruins. The angel arose from the waters and flew to see the guardian grasp at branches and slowly but stubbornly make his was back to the ruins; against the incommensurable force of the wave.
Flying over the scene the angel went to the source: the river. There he saw a mermaid that waved at him with a big smile. He got close and she said: “Drink and be more careful next time. He’s really protective of the old temple but he’s not a bad guy.” The angel drank the waters and was instantly healed. Sparkles surrounded his body like the ones that adorned the sweet, crystalline waters. He departed after thanking the mermaid: “Thanks for your kindness I will leave the temple to its guardian, then. I just wish no one would end up injured by stepping into it.” “Only those who don’t heed the warning do, but don’t worry. I’m watching too.”
