Introduction: Human Reflection
She walked through the streets and the neon signs reflected their large letters on her visor. Retro style was still fashionable this year so everyone wanted some old-school charm in them. Last year it was LCD screens and previously holographic displays. It seemed as if there was an ongoing regression with a brushstroke of nostalgia. She knew what it meant: cathode ray tubes were coming back. She opened her visor and stared at a neon sign. It spoke of stuffed toys of a certain cotton-based brand. Further down the street there were also antique armours and the, by now, unsurprising hybrid pets.
She still couldn’t understand the appeal of those creatures. As a mix of several animals, now extinct, they neither served as a reminder of what had been lost nor as a tribute to what could return. It didn’t matter anyway. The market dictated the offer and hybrids have surely proved a sensation. Sometimes she felt like one. Her body completely conquered by synthetic enhancements she saw her quasi-artificial face as a reflection on a shop window and a sigh inadvertently went out. Alloys of plastic and metal covered her body yet she still recognised the lines, the shapes, the proportions: her features remained but frozen in time by inorganics.
She closed the visor and continued walking. Her mind was both a blur of ideas and blank at the same time; unable to fix in a single subject. The vision of 704 on the face of the skyscrapper dirupted further her mind and shook her head into a single idea. She went in, took the lift and was thrown to the 115th floor. 115-273 was her door. She entered and looked around at a home that would’ve been unrecognisable to her a few centuries ago. Nowadays, the cold effectiveness of its architecture solved many problems but also lacked that pinch of humanity she had seen on the window reflection.
With a determined face she sat in front of the computer and searched, probably for too long, for the many patterns, images and sounds that had marked her life. She assigned them to specific walls and furnitures transforming them into adapted versions of her old house; the one where she grew up. She sat on the armchair of artificial wood and synthetic leather and found a warmth she hadn’t felt before. It wasn’t the real thing, it was impossible nowadays. However, this layer of humanity had awoken something in her that she didn’t want to let extinguish. It was little, surely, but it was a part of her.
