Introduction: Drink at Night
He was a large man and it only followed that his jar of beer was equally large. He didn’t guzzle the whole thing in one go. He took his time and savoured the flavour of the drink. Each sip revealed new layers of taste and he enjoyed discovering all the secrets that the beer had to disclose. It was just the fifth jug of the evening so there was time to try many more varieties. The environment was also cheerful and pleasing which only enhanced the experience. He admitted to himself that this was a great place to drink and that he should wholeheartedly recommend it. What fault could be found in it?
Perhaps the problem wasn’t what was inside but what could be seen outside. It was a cool yet quiet night with a big round Moon glowing in the sky. There were clouds that quickly passed in front of the satellite and he couldn’t believe his eyes when their shadows revealed the figure of a man with a sack over his head. At first he thought it was some poor lunatic escaped from some asylum. That was quickly discarded because when the moonlight shone he was nowhere to be seen. He also discarded the effects of alcohol: he was quite used to it and the mind wouldn’t play complex tricks like partially visualising the man with the outline of a cloud as it went by.
He stayed on his seat, absent-mindedly taking sips of beer, eyes fixed on the apparition. At no moment it crossed his mind to tell somebody else. Nobody seemed to realise what was outside and many were sat near windows, looking, pointing and discussing about places in town. The man had pale skin and dragged a huge sword behind. Its blunt edge and dented surface showed that it was more a bludgeoning than a cutting tool. He couldn’t help but react when he suddenly appeared opposite the windows he faced. His empty eyes seemed fixed on his.
He stared with an open mouth without noticing how he slowly approached; almost without movement. Touching the glass of the window panes the man pushed but was cut short. Silver glinted before the night and a dark figure kicked and slashed at the nightmarish apparition. He slashed with his sword like one might wave a flag around; each touched surface cracked under such brutality. He kept trying without finding the shadow that had hidden in an impromptu mist. The man roared and the blades stroke again with another glint: he fell.
A barmaid approached him and asked if he’d like another beer. He looked at the empty jar and tasted the beer in his mouth without giving credit to the last minutes. He refused, paid and grabbed his coat. Once outside he looked at the moonlit, empty street. There was no sign of either figure but he could notice some cracks in the pavement. They could’ve been present before he arrived; he just didn’t pay attention to such things. He decided to return home and have a good night rest. As he passed the bar’s windows he looked at the glass and saw that one pane was tainted by a black substance that had partially dissolved it. He didn’t touch the glass or say anything about it. However, the seed of doubt was already firmly planted in his mind. He needed to know more, soon.
