Introduction: Appointment at Dusk
The light is fading, the Sun is almost under its bed sheets and night is stretching its limbs everywhere. With what little sunrays remain the Iron Solari enjoy the last moments of radiance. Until tomorrow, the time will belong to others. The gate is closed and barred, windows are shut and doors locked. In desperation, a warrior in strange, foreign clothes runs towards the main gate and bangs on the door begging for entrance. A thick, dark mist extends from the path he left behind. He shrieks, pleads and screams in horror at the burning image that brings light to this moonless night.
Some Iron Solari rush to open the gate. A few regard the apparition with disdain: “Ignis Fatuus.” Others bear the scars of the night and are not so fast to disregard the vision. The gate is open and promptly sealed once the foreigner is allowed inside. Fires are lit all over the walls and the less incredulous reach for their weapons. The mist advances and covers the entire settlement. It creeps through creaks and holes getting inside homes and lungs alike. The heavy air drags the will of everyone through the floor and the faint flame keeps getting nearer. Scepticism vanishes and terror runs free: the flame has crept into the fortress.
The foreign warrior is paralyzed in front of the apparition. His past battles run all over his mind but with him in place of the countless victims his sword cut to victory. The Iron Solari also bear their fare share of horror with black nights and an eternally sunless sky. Madness rampages through the minds and ravages what little sanity remains. Gathering what little courage remains in her body a young Iron Solari conjures a solar flare. The explosion of light falls right on top of the flame and a radiant dawn temporarily visits. The flame retreats, not dispelled but weakened. Further sunlight is conjured by the valiant girl until the flame scurries back into the darkness of the nearby forest. Exhausted, she falls to her knees as her last sunrays dissolve into the night. She only hopes that this will be all for tonight because now she needs a good sleep.
